Alternatives to Mazzetti Balsamic Vinegar 4 Leaf?

I don't buy many name brand products, finding that I usually can get the same quality at a lower price tag elsewhere.

One item I appear to be stuck with is the Mazzetti Balsamic Vinegar 4 Leaf. It irks me to spend $5.40 (usual discount price) on 250ml of vinegar.

I've tried the Aldi version and it didn't come close in taste and is nearly the same price anyway.

Any recommendations for alternatives?

Another name brand item I used to buy for years was Maille Dijon mustard, but they used to do $2.50 specials - not any more, $3.50 seems the best these days. So I decided to try other options and to my pleasant surprise found Woolworths Authentic French Dijon Mustard (import from France) to be very nice, $2 every day :-). Much better than the Aldi version (made in Australia).

  • Have you tried out the "pay what you pour" oils and vinegar at your local "bulkfoods" joint? I tried out one of these joints on the weekend and the stuff I sampled was pretty decent.

The four leaf ones are great value; when you look at the ingredient list, the first item MUST be "cooked grape must" and never ever wine vinegar. Anything that starts with wine vinegar is usually sour crap. I believe the four leaf ones have grape must listed first.

We get our balsamic vinegars from Modena Italy - the origin of these vinegars. The good stuff is expensive, think $10,000 for a liter, or a a small bottle at $150 will last a decent amount of time even if you pour them over vanilla ice cream like we do - and we aren't even Italian.

The bottle we are currently using was a gift when we dined at Osteria Francescana (the world's best restaurant) last Augusut, which happens to be in Modena Italy.

Anyway good luck, find a small italian deli if you can for the good stuff - but I doubt you will find it at a cheap price point.

  • Re the Mailles - 800g-odd packs at Costco are better value than the small jars for $2.50 at Colesworth.

Only Dijon and Seeded available but hopefully that covers you!

I'll check it out in 2020 once Costco opens in Perth :-)
