Modem/Wi-Fi Router Recommendation, Currently ADSL Future NBN FTTC

Hi All - turning to the great minds of ozbargain for some advice, have tried googling but always limited in lack of knowing exactly the specifics of what to google, and also after personal opinions.
Currently I am with iinet naked adsl2/2+ and planning to stick with them until we get NBN (scheduled 1st half of 2020 FTTC). Current modem/router is one of their old BOB lite modems (>5yrs old) and recently speeds have been real slow, even though Ethernet connections (e.g. Netflix on Ethernet only loading about 40% of the time, and with numerous buffering). Support calls to Iinet have indicated surprise that I am still using the modem.
Suggestions/recommendations on new modem/router for now and NBN. Should I get a separate Wi-Fi router and modem to keep me going until NBN, and then switch only to the router? What is the best option going forward to future proof me with an ever-growing list of connected devices and future connection to NBN?
Modem/Wi-Fi considerations:
* small/medium house with single study downstairs in Sydney 'burbs.
* two young teens with their numerous connected devices
* usual assorted multiple devices connected via Wi-Fi (pcs, smart devices, tvs, ipads….)
Wish list:
* Support Adsl and then NBN FTTC later.
* Fast Wi-Fi speeds, etc…
* parental control systems
* app to control/view connections
* easy setup & compatibility
* connecting to network drives, personal network and things like that would be nice.
* voip?
* other?
* budget, up to $300

    This will tick pretty much all your boxes, though dont expect huge performance improvements if you sync speed on ADSL is bad at the moment.

    • the 68U is pretty old now, I'd at least get the 88U

        • budget, up to $300

        Edit: DSL-AC68U is $234.40 from tech.mall with POOLTIME code

        • Done, and ordered. Thanks!

      • You can but pricing is still close to $400 and the 68U does everything OP needs really. No huge benefit for that price tag.

    • Thanks ArabMoneeey, was one on my list, will start googling reviews on it.

        No worries, I have used it at mine for about 2 years with zero issues.

        Dont get confused with the RT-68U which doesn't have the inbuilt modem like the DSL-68U.

          I concur. 4 years and a bit for me and haven't skipped a beat.

          • @burhanr: Thanks guys, and thanks for the gotchya re the inbuilt modem. Any preferred supplies?

    • Done, and ordered! Thanks and have a great day!

    • Be aware this router is not suitable for FTTC if you sign up with TPG/iiNet/Internode/any of their subsidiaries. They require outgoing packets to be tagged with VLAN ID 2 which the default firmware does not allow (ID 2 is "reserved" and cannot be used).

      You can either sign up with a non-TPG ISP or use custom firmware as a workaround.

    Thanks for this post, my parents are in the same situation and I'll be taking advice from here too.
    They currently have a 4 year old TP-LINK modem and i was going to buy the newest model, which is under $100.
    They use it for communication and web search only.
    They must be getting speeds around 50kb/s when i skype them. pitiful. And theyre holding out on NBN for the future.
    iinet were surprised that they were still on the same plan as 4 years ago, and have recommended they stay, because its a good plan.

  • dont get the dsl-88u the firmware is rubbish
    i had one returned it and got a rt-86u with seperate modem in bridged mode
    fttc doesnt need a modem, you get a modem/device that reverse powers the pit

    • Bugger, already ordered :(
      Should I attempt to swap the DSL-68U for the rt-68U to allow myself a full choice of NBN providers, and what modem do you recommend in I should get?

      • i would try cancel, asus firmware is much better router only, there are a few modem/router combined modems but because of their rarity they are always 2nd class in terms of firmware

        note i got rt-86u (rt-68u is older but still good), there is also rt-88u

        any modem is fine, it is only for your adsl, you can use your existing modem in bridge mode i am using a second hand belong tg-799 with broadcom chipset worth about $5-$15 set up in bridge mode it's going great guns ( I am far from exchange so great guns is 4mbps, nbn next month though!)

        • Thanks - email sent….
