Paying Good Money to Lay down Artificial Turf

I live in Cairns and having a hard time to finding a landscaping company that isn't going to stiff me to lay about 20 sq metres of artificial turf.

The existing grass has died (zygious) so that and 1" of dirt needs removal. We cant get a small dingo to fit through the side gate so its a wheel barrow job to remove the dirt out to my 6 x 4 trailer. Spread a trailer load or two of crusher dust and run the compactor before leveling and laying down the turf.

A local company quoted me $1,000 per day for 2 blokes. They said the job would take 2 days so coming in at $2,000!

I have been trying for 3 weeks now and landscapers are either too busy, too expensive or not interested.

Does anyone know where I can source a couple of labourers to do the job?

  • Airtasker maybe?

    • Never heard of Airtasker but will check it out. Thanks

  • $100 per sqm is excessive, but most landscaping places are more interested in higher volumes of work than 20sqm.

Most companies in WA charge around $50 per sqm so I assume Cairns would not be double that.

Try and avoid 'labourers' as you want someone who does the job properly once.

    As suggested above try airtasker.

    • It's a lot more work for small areas as edges and corners take a lot more time to dig and tidy.

  • If you get a cheap job it will look crap in a few years and devalue your house and you would be better having never done it.

  • Thanks arabmoneey and seano - appreciate your advice.

I put it up on Airtasker for experienced worker/s $1,000 cash to do the job

  • Sure you want to use crusher dust? Edit: turf is artifical so all good.

    Well you did say

So they same for this too

Spread a trailer load or two of crusher dust

Sounds like lots of labour too me.

  • You can't do it yourself, OP? It seems easy enough from what you have said, just need to do some hard work digging.

  • I removed roughly the same area to replant grass. It took me about 3 days for dirt removal. 4 days of labour sounds right if including laying grass and tidying edges.

  • If you are funding all the quotes too expensive, your expectations are too low. Sure, you might find cheaper, but will you find it with a decent quality job and a warranty?

Sometimes manual labor jobs are priced up because it’s hard work and they could be doing other easier work for the same money.
