Laptop Recommendations for Programming?

Hi all. Long time lurker, first time poster.

I am currently studying a bachelor of IT and have been using my old 2013 macbook pro which is definitely showing it's age and slowing down quite significantly.

I'm in the market for an upgrade to a windows laptop.

My shortlist so far is between the Dell XPS 13, Asus Zenbook 14 or Microsoft Surfacebook 2 - however they are pushing the boundaries of my budget.

Do you guys have any suggestions for a better value laptop for under $1500?

  • Surface Pro 6?

Why not another Macbook Pro? Sell the old one and spend 1500?

  • You'd be surprised how much a $90 SSD upgrade to your Macbook will make. It'll feel like a new system.

    • 2013 macbook is already with ssd NVME

      • Ahh good call, I was thinking about the 2012 model.

  • You can get an XPS 13 from Dell outlet store for that budget. Used to see it at around $1,200 too.
Latitude is also a good choice from the same store (comes with 3 years warranty).

    • Latitude at outlet also come with 3 yrs warranty now.

  • Lenovo often seems to have good value computers. Here's a recent deal that looks pretty good ($1,149.00). Don't forget cash rewards if you go Lenovo.

  • I use my Surface Pro + Extra monitor.

  • I work as a software developer and we were all given Dell XPS 15s

  • +1 Dell

  • Bleh, comment was saying there were some nice ThinkPad A and T series deals, and they'd probably be great for what you want.

Otherwise, if you wanted something more surface esk, look for the Lenovo MIIX 520 (specifically on ebay, the one grays are selling for about $1k, will be refurb but that shouldn't matter).

Thinkpad keyboards are nice to type on, although you'd have to get used to the FN and control keys (?) Being switched.
