Couldn't Charge Our iPad Air and iPad Mini 2 Just after Hot Spell (Here: a 48 Degree Day)

Although our several iPad-family devices continued to function throughout our recent Hot Spell… Later… Direct-cable Charging didn't work (even with a new cable) a day or two after local temperatures dropped.

How we solved it: Shut 'em Down & Start 'em back Up.

Dunno why it worked… but we're happy to see 'em all charging, again. :~)

Enjoy!

When in doubt, reboot. The mantra for most electrical/computer thingies.

      • Yup, first thing I do when fixing anything like that. It actually works for a remarkable number of issues as it resets to a known base level.

Not just electrical, biological too: When I get cranky I always find a good nap helps to reset and realign my perspective.

      • Never underestimate the good done by a reset.

      • Also works when I knock out a bloke. They tend to have settled down when they come round.

        • Thats an unexpected hard reset :P

  • Did you press home button and power button together until the apple logo appeared or just the old swipe to power off?

    • These are older iPad { Air & Mini 2 }… We held down the Power button.

What's the most "powerful" way to Toggle Power an [older] iPad…?

      ..this just in:

BAD NEWS: It No longer charges! :~(

I'd better look at other possible causes of the Can't Charge symptoms, eg:

      • charger voltage-level,
      • a.c. noise riding a d.c. level,
      • power jack wear+tear,

      etc.

Try holding the power button and home button down together until the apple logo appears (can take 10+ seconds to appear) then release both buttons.

This performs a deeper reset than just power off.

        Report back.

      • Do you have an Apple store near you, not a dealer? If you have enough juice left they can usually run some diagnostics on the devices to find out what has happened. Do you have one device with the issue, or multiple devices?

  • iPad + power bank + refrigerator.

OP's ipad isn't charging because it's being used outside of normal operating temperatures (0C to 35c).

        • refrigerator will probably end up with a damp iPad. Better to just power it off completely and put it in a cool cupboard for a while.

          • @try2bhelpful:

            • moisture-proof fridge-box

            That seems reasonable…

I wouldn't put it past Apple
            to measure Temp. & inhibit
            charging when too hot.

            Could be a safety issue…?

            • @IVI: There certainly are devices that will do that. They shutdown when it is too hot and then come back when it falls to a lower temperature. Stops the beastie frying itself.
