Which Retailers Are The Worst for Price Matching?

Following on from discussion here about retailers monitoring OzBargain and finding reasons to reject price matching requests: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/434644

Please vote for which retailer, in your experience, has most frequently rejected a reasonable price match request. Please don't base your vote on unreasonable requests, where a vendor does not have stock or offer like-for-like.

Mod: added EB games to poll by request.

Just buy it from the retailer with the lower price instead of price matching (unless there's no store near you). Best to give your business to the retailer that puts in the effort instead of those that just respond to competition

Agreed. This whole demanding/expecting a retailer to price match another one is quite an odd thing here. Buy it from the cheaper retailer and support them.

I suppose Amazon will quash all this eventually as the defacto cheapest option in a couple years time.

      • +7

All of these retailers advertise a price matching guarantee, so it's reasonable for a customer to expect it.

I very rarely try to price match, though sometimes I would prefer to buy from someone closer to me and not travel half way across town.

        • +1

I don't shop there but I voted for Harvey Norman because Gerry Harvey is a douche.

This whole demanding/expecting a retailer to price match another one is quite an odd thing here.

How is it odd when they actively promote their price match policy to get you through their front door? What is odd is the way retailers consistently try to weasel their way out of honouring their own policies.

Sometimes you have vouchers for a particular store, or you want to use their rewards program. So it isn't always as simple as shopping where the price is cheapest.

    • +2

by price matching, youre allowing more people to get the cheap price

You forgot to add ebgames to your poll

    • Ugh! It won't let me add it. Can't believe I forgot EB Games.

      • EB has been added.

    • This!

I think it really depends on which store you go to. I have never had an issue at the stores I have been to and requested price matching.

      • +1

All the store i have been to said they only price match other stores in the same center. One store was literally the only store in that shopping center to sell anything video game related.

  • +2

David Jones Price Match too! Got some A Level cologne for Local Perfume Shop price.

    • +2

Yeah, all they require is that the item's in stock and they also do bricks and mortar stores as well. Even when I worked there, I'd get them to price match Peter's of Kensington as it was cheaper than buying it with staff discount

      • Thanks TIL this information is priceless.

  • +11

Gotta be bunnings. They make extra SKUs for things like Makita circular saws to avoid their own price beating policy.

    • +11

Lowest prices are just the beginning! ;)

  • +2

The gates are open and they're off, Hardly Normal quickly takes the lead with Myer and office works trailing behind at 4!

  • +2

    Masters

  • +3

    hardly normal and jb

would be good if you could choose 2 options

  • +2

How do I pick all of them?

“Sorry, we cant match that, it’s below our buy price” - literally every Harvey Normal, ever.

Tried multiple times at multiple stores and I’m never asking for big discounts, just to price match JB or Officeworks for example to save me a longer drive, and this is always the reason I get.

Followed very closely but EB Games with their “We can’t match that price, because it has to be identical stocked item and within same area/shopping center as our store.” Or, “yes, we are aware they are lower, but we have already called them and they do not have stock” when the other store totally does have stock.

  • +1

I've found JB hi-fi good for price matching the last few times I've asked. Maybe it's the particular store?

    • I find they are extremely easy to price match as opposed to years ago. I think it has something to do with Amazon AU now gives them pressure?

  • +1

Harvey Norman for sure if we are talking just not being into it at all, Officeworks and Bunnings for SKU bs.

For me personally a special shout out to ebgames in Hobart for not price matching Harvey Norman because they are 'not in the cbd so don't count', Hobart's cbd is all of 1 block and the Harvey Norman is maybe 3 blocks from there, literal 5 minute walk and a shorter drive to pretend they aren't a competitor is hilarious

  • Can you make the poll multi-selection? I have had issues with more than one retailer from the list above.

    • It's not supported. It would be nice if you could order them or rate them.

  • -1

Bikies never want to price match with the young hoodlums.

  • +2

I just realised it's a bit unfair to popular retailers. To do this properly, would need an online survey so we could collect number of requests vs rejections. Could grab a whole lot of other useful stats like rejection reasons, etc.

  • +3

I've found that HN online will Price Match almost anything, then you can Click and Collect. I've tried a couple times to get them to price match in store. When they refused, I jumped online and got it Price Matched and picked it up a few hours later from that same store. Downside of course is that you're shopping at HN (although there isn't much competition in some country towns)

  • +1

JB has price matched cheap games for me. EB Games wouldn't, in the same shopping centre for no obvious reason, so screw you EB and your overpriced games.

  • What about chemist warehouse?

  • +1

Bunnings because the model number is not identical since they have commissioned the supplier to make an identical product with a 'special' model number for their use only as per @furys12. Also all other big business retailers who are too lazy to honour the cheaper retailer since 'shipping' needs to be considered even though I can walk to Umart but Officeworks wont honour their prices anyway….. My advice, ditch the big guys and look after the smaller retailers who will always give you a better deal…..

EB recently 'upgraded' my RE2 preorder to something called the Lenticular edition without my permission. It was obviously a ploy to try to avoid price matching. I just asked to have it swapped for a normal version when picking it up. I don't normally pre order but I got $40 trade in for AC Origins during a promotion where they gave double money if you trade in on a pre order.

  • I think price matching should be banned.

  • +1

Top Ryde JB Hifi doesn't allow price matching of new video games, as per "company policy". When quizzed as to where on the website, it shows this, the staff member then changed his tune and muttered "it's store policy".

At that point, I had enough, walked out and simply price matched from the next door Big W. Had enough of this deceitful lot.

  • I find some retailer really bad at price match like HN. Also, there are many idiots who try to price match items when it clearly does not meet the T&C. When they are denied, then they start whining about it as if they are entitled. They are the worst.

  • how do we vote for a few, keen on bunnings who got a bit arrogant once masters closed in my experience and the good guys who create different SKUs for different colors which arent stocked at other retailers (happened with a samsung fridge - they didnt have much to say when I said there werent many online reviews of the model so how do I know its a good model)

  • This is not a fair poll as often retailers have best locations would receive most price match requests and people only remember rejections. And I can also tell you lots of people have unreasonable requests.

It should be Which retailers are best for price matching.

    • Agree that it's unfair - see my comment above. Reversing the poll would also be unfair to the smaller retailers.

  • JB HIFI always have the biggest sook when pricematching MSY.

    • MSY is a wholesaler though, don't forget.

      • +1

The term 'wholesaler' doesn't really mean much these days. Especially given the size of some retailers and the fact that they have direct deals with manufacturers.

      • And capitalism is capitalism, best price gets my business.

  • Each company listed has slightly different price matching policies and can't all be treated the same.

This discussion thread would be better to have people put their stories and examples where Company X vs Company Y did not price match due to XYZ reason (where clearly they have broken their price match policy).

I've been into most of the above stores and if it's below cost price they will refuse or look to technical reasons like SKU differences, model number, or configuration parameters.

Other reasons for refusal include whether the company has physical stores, company ABN, considered 'promotional sale/clearance stock', locality (won't price match other regions - eg. State, Suburb).

Companies at the end of the day want to make money so price matching is only there to get you to spend your money at their store (even though you weren't going to).

Support the store which gives the discount!

    • If you think it will work then go ahead and create the thread and drop a link here, like I did on the previous thread.

However as I mentioned above, I think it would be best done with something like surveymonkey.com, where you can illicit more info from each participant and compile a few different stats at the end. But who has the time to set that up… ?

  • JB for sure

  • Pretty rare that I actually require a price match. 9/10 it's cheaper to have stuff delivered to my door than to travel to a shop. However the times I require it i've had good success rate. Good guys even matched a TV from a brick and mortar store in another state.

I did however have a weird knock back. I bought some Adidas shoes which were 50% off on Adidas official website. I just happened to be at a shopping center that had an adidas store. They wouldnt price match themselves… max I could get in store was 30%. Weird.
