Refundable/Easy to Change Domestic Flights in Oz?

Hi all,

I need to travel from Perth - Melbourne in Feb. and am about to book flights.

Thing is, I may need to travel overseas to Europe at this time for a family member who needs serious surgery.

I have been waiting on confirmation of the date for surgery so really not sure when it will be.

Can anyone suggest a flexible ticket that I can purchase in case I need to change/cancel the flight? Or are there any domestic insurance options?

Thanks in advance.

Using frequent flyer points you can change the fare for a minimal fee.

    • Thanks but all out of points :(

      • Maybe get someone in your ozbargain “family” to transfer you some.
Otherwise I’m not aware of any way to get flexibility without just buying the more expensive tickets.

    Options

    1) Buy the fully flexible ticket that allows change of dates for a small fee (usually 4x the cost of discounted)
    2) Buy cheap tickets to and from Melbourne and take the loss if you can't go
    3) Overseas flight originating from Melbourne and returning back to Perth (travel agents can sort this out)

Insurance will not cover your interstate flight due to the need to travel overseas for a family member.

Yes they have these things call flexible full fare tickets, you can change dates without costs, its amazing and just what you want.

I'm assuming the Perth - Melb trip isn't that urgent/important. If that's the case, wait until you're sure if you need to go to Europe before buying your domestic flight ticket. Even last minute tickets will tend to be cheaper than buying a flexible ticket.
