If a Competition Does Not Specify a "Region Only" Would You Assume It Was International?

So I enter a lot of twitter and instagram competitions and a lot of them don't have a terms and conditions attached (the ones that do I read fullY) nor do they specific if it's international or "US only" "UK only" and so on.

I remembered I was going to enter this instagram competition, nowhere did it say "UK only" it was very low entry so everyone has a good chance. Before I entered I asked if it was open to Aus participants and only then did they edit the post to say "UK only"

What if I had won and then found out I couldn't even get it?

So if a competition states nothing about only being in one location, would it be alright to assume that generally means international entries are allowed?

  • Oh and so everyone knows. I am not talking about ones where I have to go somewhere in a country I don't even live in, but more ones they send to you.

If the prize is a digital download code just enter (if codes for the prize are region free, most specify if not), if it's a physical prize that needs to be sent by post will ask or check if someone already asked.

    I'd assume intergalactic.

    • Don't forget your towel. If you win.

    • what about across time lines?

      • Pfft time lines. I'm talking about inter dimensions.

        • what about inter dimensional time lines and alien babes ;)

  • Ultimately if you are believe you are right then your only option is to pursue legal action through the courts of the country where the company is based, that will be complex and expensive.

    • Its not about the money. Its about the principle.

  • As your own example shows, you clearly shouldn't assume.

Depends on where the Instagram owner is from. If they're American and their main audience are Americans, I wouldn't assume it's open to the whole world.
They could be clearer, but they probably thought their fans were predominantly Americans (or local)
