PSA: It's OK to Overtake a Police Car

For example: If a police vehicle is traveling at 60km/h in a 70km/h zone it is OK to overtake them when safe to do so. Just don't exceed 70km/h.

  • …were you travelling behind someone that would not overtake a police car?

    • +2

Yes. It happens on a semi regular basis and makes me angry.

With the number of changing speed zones, it'd be good to be sure you're actually in a 70 zone first! ^_^

remember to downshift to hit redline when overtaking

    • If you’re driving a turbo car and you don’t hit boost when overtaking, you’re doing it wrong

  • Saw today a guy cross over two solid lines over to oncoming traffic to over take 2 mounted police officers without indicating only to come to a traffic light… It amazes me the amount of people that just look in front of them and not far enough to see what is also ahead.

    • Did the poice pull him over with the horses. A civic driver cut into my wife just before the lights. I knew the driver was going to do it, but as she is a passive driver and always stays to the speed limit she didn't close the gap before the other guy could cut in. Then hes cutting in and out of traffic. By the time we get to the 3 or 4th lights hes got himself in the wrong lane and we drive right past the lights and hes stuck at the lights when it turns red. Older driver. I'm not a perfect driver, and have probably done the same. You quickly realise that traffic is hopeless and you just turn up the radio and go with the flow.

As for passing police car. Yeah. overtake the police and pop in front of them then drop to 60 in a 70k zone. Don't get me started on that. I've posted enough on slow drivers not at least going the speed limit.

Lol. Were you on the M1 yesterday. The PoPo was hogging right most lane at 90kmph. I was the only person who overtook.

    • The PoPo was hogging right most lane at 90kmp

What was the speed limit there ? 90 ?

I find it much more annoying how the people speeding, suddenly slow down to 10km or 20km under posted speed limit. Ie. The right overtaking only lane, will have bunch of cars doing 115-120 in 110 zone, then they all react, as they hit where cop car is, and suddenly slow down, and the left lane becomes the fastest due to the people worrying they are busted for speeding, and trying to take it back alleviate suspicion, by slowing down to 10kmph or more under.
I see this happening all the time.

Annoying asf when in overtaking only lane, and suddenly you see the line of traffic in that lane kind of go backwards suddenly (thats how it looks, as suddenly their speed drops significantly and the left lane remains the same speed as they were always traveling, so left lane overtaking at about 10kmph)

      • Was a 100kmph stretch.

  • Nothing wrong with that, I have even honk at the cop car which fallen sleep at the traffic lights once.

      cojones

Actually that is probably, technically, illegal. You should only sound your horn as a warning device.

      • +1

If the officer fell asleep at the lights, then he is a danger to other road users so I would say a warning is valid.

        • It was boomramada's view that the cop had fallen asleep, there could've been a number of reasons why the cop was stopped. I stand by the technically illegal statement. Don't honk the horn at cops you are only going to annoy them.

"Officially, you're only supposed to use your horn if you're warning other road users (or animals) of your approach."

          • @try2bhelpful: I like how you all making assumptions, nothing wrong with what I did,
clearly cop is distracted/sleeping, I honk as "You need to warn other road users that your vehicle is approaching"
Which is in the road rules. And there is no flashing lights.

Is it ok not to overtake them?

  • +9

they are probably looking for someone to have a drag race with.

but be warned - when they lose then the lights and sirens come on.

    they are bad losers.

Why is this a question? Where are the bargains?

    • +6

Could get a free ride in a police car

      • +1

plus free overnight accomodation, with heating

        • and maybe even free company and something else that is free that needs a free trip to the doctor

          • @AlienC: Comes with free food if you stay a few nights.

  • Yes, but you may likely draw (negative) attention to yourself. Ie. If it seemed a little unsafe, they might pull you up. Things like 'safe braking distances from car ahead' seem to be highly subjective.

That said, they might be staying in the left lane at 60 because they have a left turn ahead, or because the right lane merges into a lane where you must turn right.

As others have mentioned also, most people haven't had their speedo tested regularly. I know mine is out for my suv, I worked it out that I can go about 5km over and still be under speed limits (seems to be more of difference at higher speeds, maybe 7km speedo reads over,in 100km zone, and 4km over reading, in 50 zone). And yes, I would like my speedo fixed to be exact, but it would cost more than the value of my suv. The tricky part is when I get into my van, and am so used to going a bit over (to adjust for suv speedo), van seems to be spot on.

      same.
How did you find out your speedo is wrong? Did you compare it with the GPS in your phone (like I did)?

      • +1

        Yes, compared on phone.
But also noticed day or 2 after car purchase, when on roads I travel frequently.
I noticed , hey why is everyone suddenly overtaking me going at xxx speed, when I travel all the time on this road and at xxx speed and I'm with the traffic (same speed).
Then I confirmed my observation with several phone GPS apps and noticed how much speedo is off, and that it is slightly more km off at higher speeds.

  • Years ago I was passing a convoy of 3-4 trucks on the Hume. I was doing ~110 on cruise and slowly going by them.

I was about one truck deep into the overtake when I noticed a police car with lights flashing approaching quickly. There wasn’t room for me to safely slide across into the gap between the trucks.
The trucks were maintaining their speed and the police car was soon right up behind me. I knew they weren’t after me so I accelerated to 130 and moved into the nearest safe gap and decelerated.

Id like to know what the officers thoughts were, but he quickly passed me and disappeared into the distance.
