Tyres for 205 45 17

Got another 2-3mm on the current set of tyres - Bridgestone Potenza S100. Should last for another 12 months. Being an ozbargainer, will be keen to jump onto a good deal (ie. 4 for 3 potenza deals).

Thinking of what to get next, that is not over costly.

I have previously used Dunlop SP900, Sport Maxx, ContiSport5, Sumitomo HTRZII, Goodyear Eagle F1 Directional… Happy with all of them… however, most would cost more than the S100. Sumitomo was the best value tyre I've had, but not very common in AU.

Thinking whether I should get the Bridgestone S100 (happy with them) - $210 a corner (too bad that BS is currently not having deals on their Potenza range), or look for less costly alternatives under $200. Found some Dunlop Sport Maxx for $550 delivered without fitting, so around $650 fitted - $160 per corner - pretty decent deal.

Any recommendations for better tyres (particular in wet) than the Sport Maxx for similar money? Have not tried some cheaper tyres - Hankook evo2, kuhmo escata le sport, Laufen S Fit, Pirelli P Zero Nero GT… comment from ozb-ers with hands on experience with those tyres (particularly fitted to a FR car).

Thanks.

  • Posters on OzRenault always suggest tiretrack.com. Ive never tried them, but you buy them overseas and get them fitted here. Just check delivery and cost against local. Worth a look.

  • Have you checked the prices on 215 45 17? They should fit OK unless you are already over size and they may be cheaper. Bonus also is that it may make your speedo more accurate.

    • Care to elaborate please? Thought profile is the % of width. Therefore, longer width with the same profile will give a large circumference?

Given the circumference is bigger, the speedo will be less accurate?

      • Should be a tad bigger(a few mm at best), the real speed will be closer to odo so more accurate.

FWD here if that helps. Are your wheels 7.5" width? I'm asking because my car is 7.5" and the oem tyres are Goodyear F1 AS 2 205/45/17, but I think even if you're using 7" width can still fit 215 tyres.

I have gone with Michelin pilot sport 4 with 215/45/17 which is $169 per corner because if I choose 205/45/17 then they would cost $259 per corner. Also Michelin is doing $100 off for a set of 4 which makes the total $576 fitted from Jaxtyres.

Another thing, isn't FR car usually using staggered setup for more grip at the rear? or oem uses square set?

    • My car (Cerato Sport) comes standard with 215 45 17 on 7.0" alloy rims and I've been looking at those Michelins from Jax. It looks like a very good deal.

    • Update: found out Bob Jane has the same price too for $576 after discount.

Tempe tyres usually have good deals

  • Upgrading the tyre size to the next size isn't a problem most of the time.
What car and wheel width size do you have?

Install a GPS speedo app on your phone and see how far out your speedo is then use an online calculator to determine which size tyre will work for you best. When my car was 6kmph out at 100kmph, I adjusted it by picking a different size to be within 2kmph of 100kmph.

    • Ok thx.

This is for the mx5 stock 205/45/17.

Plenty of people run 215/45/17 on MX-5 that have stock 17x7" rims.

On my NB SE (turbo), I ran 225 on a 8" wide rim, you've got plenty of room in the guards without having to modify anything.

        • Probably will by me option. One size wider makes a big diff in price.

  • Go to a new car wrecker and find a 2018/19 Mazda with low KMs and buy the tyres/rims. Up grade your rims, get new tyres. At your next service get a wheel allignment/balance.

Its what I did with my 2013 model car when I needed new tyres. Got 2016 rims and tyres with 6000kms on them. Saved ~$400. Then sold my old rims and tyres for $150.

    • Thanks.

There is a wrecker selling per rim @ $250 each, not really a deal.

      • Yeah, just got to shop around. Good luck

  • Look up the reviews for Falken's FK510 - they are on par with a lot of the premium makes in the wet and are quite well priced!
