What Happens When This Optus Pixel 3 Plan Ends after Two Years?

Hello everyone,

I am opening this thread in hopes of getting my question regarding mobile phone contracts. I have never involved myself in any mobile phone contracts before and I have only a little idea on how they work. I tried live chat on the official website but their support agents are always busy.

I am looking at this plan that costs $59 per month at Optus. The link to the plan is: https://offer.optus.com.au/coverage-and-value

I can select Google Pixel 3 with 64GB storage. The financial part of the page says that it is $59 per month for the plan and $0 for the phone. So, I will be paying $59 monthly. It is a two-year contract with a minimum payment of $1416 in those two years. It is my understanding that I cannot use any other sim on the locked phone during those two years.

So, my question is what happens after two years? After those two years, will the phone be mine or should I give it back to Optus (since I have not paid any amount for the phone and it is just for the plan)?

Please let me know any other details that I should be aware of when going into contracts.

Thanks for your help and I am sorry if I have posted in the wrong place or if I have made some mistakes.

IIRC, there are no more carrier locks. It's your phone; you can put whatever SIM you want in there.

If it's lease, you return. Otherwise, it's yours. You can sell it the day you receive it if you'd like, you'll just keep paying out the contract.

Lease plans - return phone at end of contract
Own plans - own phone at end of contract

You can use any SIM in your phone so you can use your phone overseas for example.

I believe you are talking about this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/431826

If that is the case, then it is not a leased plan which is good. Your Pixel 3 will be an unlocked device and it will be yours at the end of plan term.

PS: On another note, just walk into Harvey Norman and ask for this plan. They are offering further 10% off on all 24 month Optus plans (This is not advertised anywhere on their website however it is available because a friend of mine signed up through them only yesterday).

    • can this be done if my existing phone number is with Optus? heard it can be rejected to port from optus to optus

      • You have to temporarily port out to another provider e.g. Vodafone or Telstra and then walk into HN store.

Phone should be unlocked, and you can put whatever sim you want at any time. Whether you use the sim or phone doesn't matter to them, you will still be liable for the fees of the contract. You can sell the phone if you want.

If it isn't a lease, then you keep the phone. After the contract is over, you normally just continue to pay the same monthly fee until you cancel with them. Since you aren't in contract, you'd be free to switch to another company.

  • What did optus say when you asked them?
