Optus Silently Increases Their Pricing and Removed Student Discount

I just realised that galaxy tab s4 increased $5 a month and so is the nonpro ipad. And that no 10% discount for all phones anymore, instead there is competition to go to new york.

Bit disappointed. Thoughts?

    I didn't hear it either.

    • First thing that popped into my mind when I heard the floorboard creak last night.

      Bloody Optus changing their pricing.

Go with Telstra $29 then for ipad or use it as bargaining tool

    https://www.telstra.com.au/tablets/tablets-on-a-plan/ipad-9-…

It was recently 10gb amonth maybe you can ask telstra to give you that too

  • I held off getting a galaxy tab 4 when the Netflix promo was on, thinking they'd do something different when it finished, didn't realize it'd be nothing and a $5 increase per month.

Also missed out on the $999 256gb version at JB Hifi the other day (seemed like they only discounted it for 24 hours).

Where is the New York competition?

  • I guess vote with your feet.

It's annoying that they are doing without letting us know, but then again, they're in it to make as much money as possible, and I guess they figure removing this stuff is less likely to bring in more business, and more likely to bring them more money.

Problem is, they are still the cheapest for a Galaxy tab 4 plan, so really they were just closing the gap as they were a bit cheaper than voda.

  • My bills increased 3cents with the way rounding works with GST on the new Optus billing system

My 24 month plan finished a few months ago, I was paying 55 month, just last month they removed my discounts and increased it to $80 month, for 8gb/month lol.

What bothers me is that they didnt even let me know. I just got a mysterious email the other day saying 'Thank you for placing your order'.

  • Optus increased my internet by 5 bucks a month without mentioning it. They no longer have my business.

  • Merged from Optus - 10% for Students withdrawn?

Has anyone else had any success with getting 10% off 24mth plans through the student hub?

    https://offer.optus.com.au/student-hub

I did 2 live-chats and both Optus staff said Optus currently only has student discount offers off the $55 Sim-Only plan and the $125 plans.

That's despite me receiving my promo code this afternoon and in the email, it says: "The perks of being a student just got better!
Here's your promo code to save 10% off monthly plan fees on eligible products."

I haven't seen any posts about the student offer being retracted so was just seeing if anyone else has had any success and if it's just me.

10% off monthly plan fees on eligible products."

It does state eligible products so they can pretty much just have it on whichever products they want, and deny it on whatever products they want also.

I would go for a prepaid option, if you are really keen to save $$ . Depending on what extent you're willing to go to save money, you can even switch sims regularly and actually make money (like with shopback recent deal). Also plenty of 99 cents a month options come up here as deals.

Then you have the Optus option I choose. I use prepaid, but buy $30 sim starter packs when they are $5. You can just do sim replacement to add say 3x$30 onto 1 account, then have the $90 a month plan for $15 .
I don't know why anyone locks into 24month plans these days, especially when you're not getting a phone with it. So many better alternatives IMO and why lock in, when you can leave yourself open to change, if a better deal comes along.

      • The prepaid does seem like a pretty good deal!

I was just eyeing the 110$ iPhone XS deal, with 200GB and with the bonus entertainment options and the with unlimited International calls to some countries, it seemed like a really good deal for my needs!

I've been waiting for my current contract to elapse and have been waiting to take up the deal.. But now that I'm ready to sign up.. They've retracted the student discount and reducing the value proposition :(

    • Does seem to be the case, it certainly used to apply to pretty much every plan.
