Do You Think My Car Will Get Written-off? MAZDA 3 2014 NEO, Tree Vs CAR

Had a mishap a few days ago but I luckily managed to get away without major injuries to myself, whiplash, concussion and a dislocated shoulder.

I swerved to avoid a front on collusion with a large kangaroo, but didn't see the tree next to the road. Not my brightest moment. I was only going 50km/h thankfully but crashed the car and some kind people helped me out.

I am a uni student so I have contact hours nearly 9-5, every week day for clinic and lectures.
I work 6 days of the week, so I rely on my car quiet heavily.

Car is a Mazda 3 Neo 2014 Automatic without the upgraded Audio system.
Front airbags went off, have nice bruising to my chest from it.

I am with Suncorp insurance and have made a claim. I'm in Cairns this changes things.
Car insured is around 15900. I think fixed value.

Only reason I hope it does is so I can move on quickly, I know with the crazy flooding, all parts and everything coming up this north has been delayed.

Do you think my car gets written off?

Hay Kangaroos are living beings - it's their planet too. Considering how much we rip the crap out of the planet its nice when people try and do the right/good thing.

Agree with this - but also think in most cases the driver doesn’t get a lot of time to analyse the situation and it’s a natural reaction to try to avoid a collision that leads to swerving off the road. Sometimes they come from nowhere or jump a direction you don’t expect.

      • Its your life or theirs….

Urghhhh… hate to think about it

    • That's true. We have less than 1 second to decide. Save yourself or save the kangaroo.

My cousin habib will have your car looking like new in no time.

    • I'm interested in knowing your cousin mate !

Replace op with paul walker and he would have ripped the handbrake, swung around, popped the car in reverse whilst flipping off said kangaroo

    • And just as I got over his death.. thanks for the sads.

Replace op with paul walker Richard Hammond and he would have ripped the handbrake, swung around, popped the car in reverse whilst flipping off said kangaroo burst into flames

      • Walker wasn't driving when that happened

While it is human nature to try and swerve in this situations, the law does state in most cases you shouldn't.

    https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/safety-rules/road-rules/ani…

"If you see an animal on the road (alive or dead), do not swerve violently to avoid the animal as this can cause you to lose control of your vehicle or to hit oncoming traffic. You should stop if you can do so safely or slow down and steer around the animal in a controlled manner.
If you can’t avoid the animal safely you may have to hit it to avoid injury or death to yourself and others."

And it does make a good point, that tree could have been a person or a person with a baby or an embankment.

  • The car is certain to be written off.

  • Insured for above market value.
Single vehicle crash into a tree.

Expect a thorough investigation from your insurance company.

I think insurance company have a value range to select which you cant just insure whatever you want.

      • -4

Yep. You can pay for a value more than market value, but that doesn't mean the insurance company will give you that.

        • Edit: Misread previous comment

        • If you are referring to agreed value then insurance company must pay the agreed value if the car is written off less the admin cost i.en excess

The agreed value is the contract the insurancer and the car oqner the value should be paid in event of total lose. Read the PDS

The insurancer think OP intentionally crash intonthe tree is another story

        • That’s not true. I’d goi pay for an agreed value. It must be paid out as that.

Never ever swerve to avoid hitting an animal.
If you hit the animal, you only have damaged bumper bar and windscreen.
But if you swerve, you potentially get you self or others killed.

  • No question. Written off for sure.

  • LOL of course that's a write off LOL.

  • No one asked whether the tree was fine

    • +3

Was fine after coming out of treeage.

  • Your cars defs going to be written off

  • Yeah that'll be a write off. With the significant damage to the engine bay, body panels, and airbag deployment, that should easily be above the threshold for a write off. Depending on kms the car would have been worth $12-14k before the crash if you were to sell it.

Any yeah, never swerve for the kangaroo.

  • I'm not doubting your story, definitely could have happened, but do expect a thorough investigation from Suncorp. They pretty much investigate all roo-related claims. Especially if you've insured your car for above-market value.

They're also going to be swamped from all the natural disaster claims if there's flooding - your claim might be put on a slight hold if they need to wait for an assessor to, well, assess it. Good luck! :)

  • Swerving or braking in those situations may be a flight or fight response, in this case flight would be swerving and braking would be the fight response. Unless your driving training included braking suddenly to avoid collisions, it is possible that you may defer to one of the two responses regardless of what you know to be the better choice when faced with and immediate reaction.

Good that you alive op. The car did its job at least in protecting you. Worth the money lost.

  • Enjoy buy another care it not worth fix don't strees most like Suncorp busy deal with Townsville flood at the moment your low on list

  • Great news that you are ok, just with some bruising.

Looks like a good example of crumple zones working well.
