JB are selling a Surface Pro for 899. Have to add keyboard/cover but that's a good price if you ask me for something super light and well regarded. I use macs personally and noticed that kids tend to gravitate to whatever their friends use so ask some of the other parents at the school etc.
Another option is an UltraBook, I noticed MSY is selling a new model the MSI PS42 for $1099. That's a really good price for such a light all in one notebook. Plenty of grunt too. It's on page 10 of their pdf price list under "New Arrivals".
Officeworks have a few options on their site that are marked as "School List Item". They seem to come with SSD drives but you might need to add a bit more memory. Other key items are weight and battery life so just make sure those are also ok. JB and other stores should also have suitable laptops for school so just ask in store and they should be able to help out.
I agree; focus on weight and battery life.
In addition, focus on the key uses and don't be distracted by higher specs for non-core uses.
Probably have to go secondhand at that price.
