  • are there actually ppl out there that prefer Chrome OS over others

Me, my wife, my mother, my sister. Pretty much anyone who has used a midrange Chromebook and doesn't need video editing or extensive photo and music production. Mind you, those things can be done with Linux apps now too.

me. Using a Pixelbook and won't touch Windows/Mac with a yardstick.

Which search engine do you use mate? And are you an Android user?

Google has likely already "harvested" a lot of your usage information. If not them, then Facebook, or Apple, or even our government with the totally-not-authoritarian metadata retention laws.

Very hard to truly be anonymous online these days.

Google should pay me for the privilege.

This assumes Google is interested in someone such as yourself.

    eMMC storage on a >$1k machine… ewww

    • correct, eMMC, no , thanks

Chrome book? Only worth $200 at most…

I beg to differ with the Samsung Chromebook Pro I've had for a couple of years. Others are always surprised by how good the 3:2 1440p display is, how small and light it is, how it runs Android apps. Really solid use of $750 IMO.

Not everyone wants Windows. It's fine if you do though.

Also a Chromebook Pro user. Really is a great machine which i throw around everywhere when i don't want to carry around my work 15 inch MBP.

I think this is overpriced though. Nice to see an 8th gen CPU on it but ARM should be winning the chromebook space.

Why not just get a dev machine and put linux on it? Or just get a mac? If all you want is a semi functional laptop/tablet with 3:2 why don't you go tablet with keyboard?
https://h20386.www2.hp.com/AustraliaStore/Merch/Offer.aspx?p… or any surface laptop - just install linux.

Because I don't want a detaching keyboard. Because I like having the same Android apps that are on my phone. Because I enjoy the lightweight focus of Chrome OS. Because there isn't a Linux or Mac machine with the same specs and build quality at a better price.
Not sure why people are so touchy about others liking Chrome OS machines.

          • @Tinqer: I was asking questions is all. I tried Pixel book as dev machine for a bit (borrowed) but went back to a Dell XPS 13 with Ubuntu.

Personally wouldn't touch a laptop with only 128gb storage, especially a chromeOS one, especially when paying just over $1k.

I can understand why people would want an in between device that is like a tablet but with a fixed keyboard.

Also ChromeOS isn't lightweight, it requires a fair bit of grunt to run well, it's not very well optimised at all. Most benchmarks I ran, I got higher scores on windows desktops chrome compared to chromeOS chrome.

@onlinepred: Fair enough. In my experience Chrome OS runs smooth on fanless Intel M3's and even many ARM processors. And I don't struggle much with only 32gb storage at the moment. Everyone's got different uses I suppose.

              • -5

@Tinqer: Windows runs smooth on fanless M3's, doesn't really mean anything - same thing happens, once you load up a few browser tabs you will hit a bottleneck. Anyway all good enjoy!

I don't think this has same build quality as Mac btw. It's Acer.

I've just started using a Samsung Chromebook Plus but I've heard of touchacreen issues so I'm a bit scared. Did you ever have any issues or know any more about that?

        • +1

I haven't heard of that, but there's a Plus and a Pro in my home and neither have had issues.

          • @Tinqer: Ok great, fingers crossed mine never comes across any issues too!

ive got a 550AUD asus c302 and its awesome!!

    • +3

      I've plus'ed you, but those hardware specs aren't 200 bux worth that's for sure…

      • can you install chromeOS in any laptop ?

        • You can install CloudReady on almost anything, which is ChromeOS without Android apps.

    • Pixelbook forever

  • +1

    eMMC storage, I would avoid.

  • +6

Funny thing is, people complain about paying 1000 bucks for this yet they're probably paying more for ipad pros which does substantially less.

  • Can someone recommend a chromebook? Thanks in advance.

    • +3

This is a great one. The Samsung Chromebook plus and pro, the Asus C302 and C434, the Pixel LS, the Pixelbook. Those are all the higher end ones which are generally awesome to use. They are just so damn fast and reliable and secure no update nightmare. They truly "just work".

      • Thanks. Will look into them.

    • Pixelbook. Had the Samsung CBPlus and it was a tire fire nightmare. Slow af. Get anything with an i5 (like this one, 8th gen especially) and you'll be cruising everything with 0 lag.

  • Debating changing to this one from the Pixelbook which is 7th gen i5. Giving up the PB's unparalleled aesthetics for a faster CPU, is it worth it?

    • +1

Only if you're hungry for speed or a slightly larger screen. I reckon everything else is slightly better in the Pixelbook.

    • I pre-ordered a Pixelbook from Amazon US.

I like to buy and sell new notebooks every 6-12 mths.

I still have the Pixelbook about 18 mths later.

I still cant find anything better.

Guess that's the only disappointing thing about the Pixelbook, because I really want to try something new but nothing is around which is better than a Pixelbook.
