Ford XR6 FG on Gas or Petrol Model?

I know gas is cheaper and all the other benefits, but I’m not sure with availability of gas at servos , I’m sure melb servos have gas in most but what about if I was to do a road trip and travel to Sydney . What would the availability be like?

we travelled from SA to QLD with a 400km tank range LPG car in the 90's. Can't imagine it would be less available now.

If you look on the nsw fuelcheck app you can see servos that sell lpg, there is plenty of them on this side of the border, id imagine it would be the same in Vic.

    get a small 4cyl car

    • lol why? Maybe a scooter instead?:)

Ford is old povo car, most cars are 4cyl these days with and without turbo. Safer, more fuel efficient and more power.

        • FG XR6 195kw, 391nm.

Well that was the expert's opinion, thanks.

I prefer something that doesn’t break down and will last a while . You sound like a golf owner “lol

@gerasim9: Doesn't break down … and you went with a ford? Can you describe your haircut for me?

@cypher67: Why do cabbies use them? They clock 500,000km lol , 4.0l Barra is a very strong motor , only thay go on these cars are suspension bushings. I can’t say for other ford models but these are pretty indestructible e . wow “can you describe your hair cut “ , you sound lame

    • It will be a Ute , and I need it for work

  • cant recall the last servo I see that did not carry LPG

  • Most servos still seem to have gas. Maybe some tiny town with 1 pump , might not have gas. Like this camping spot I went to next to national park area, had a general store (also the butcher, newsagent, probably post office, AND they had a fuel pump out front).
Most, if not all, proper size servo will have gas. Anyway, aren't they all dual fuel ? So can have petrol filled just in case.

1 thing to be wary of in cost of gas vehicles, be sure to check expiry or when gas tank needs to be checked/replace. I understand some people sell just before the expiry runs out, and is a very costly thing to service/replace the gas stuff when it's due. And they cannot roadworthy it without the special 10 years replacement/full-refurb etc.

You will save on fuel, you will have less power. And same vehicle will use more gas to get Syd-Melb compared to how many litres fuel petrol car will use Syd-Melb . But because the cost per litre is so much less with gas, it works out cheaper option for the distance, even though you use more litres up.

If it isn't duel fuel, I wonder if there is some way to keep a small amount LPG on hand…. Like you would keep a jerry can of petrol, only 1 that holds LPG safely.

Power is better on gas model . a bit more torque ! Engines are stronger and have different / better pistons compared to petrol model. Ok good point about the expiry dates , I’m not sure if this counts as its a factory system

      • Could just call any mechanics that do roadworthy on gas vehicles. They should be able to tell you straight the extra costs (if any).
I know in NSW, not all roadworthy mechanics are authorized to do checks on gas vehicles.
I haven't got much budget, and was looking into a gas vehicle myself for fuel savings. That's the main thing that stopped me (high cost when gas needs compulsory servicing). I was looking something about 2k, so cost of gas bottle replacement etc too much on something only worth 2k.
I would expect factory gas might need less checks than a conversion, good point there.
It would almost certainly need the gas bottle itself replaced or refurbished after 10 years or something. They have that law on just your little BBQ gas bottle, so I would expect cars would must something similar. With your BBQ gas bottle it's cheaper to replace bottle rather than pay for the 10yr servicing . Vehicle might be cheap to recondition/refurbish all the fittings etc, instead of whole new bottle.

There's sure to be an ozbargain 'expert' here that knows all about it. Preferably someone in VIC so to be certain of relevant laws/conditions.

Another consideration, I believe they are thinking about removing the tax exemption status on LPG. If this happens, everyone will be trying to sell off their LPG vehicles, so they will decrease in value, if the main benefit (fuel savings) is taken away. It is better for the environment apparently, but most people go gas to save on fuel $$ .

        • Where did you hear about the gas exemption for taxis being removed ?

          • @gerasim9: Here is a little bit of info about it
            https://www.raa.com.au/motoring-and-road-safety/fuel-informa…

I'm not sure where I heard about it. And as far as I know, there is no definite plan to increase LPG excise tax.
It wouldn't surprise me if they keep increasing the tax on LPG, probably not to the full amount payable on other fuels though, because they want us to use LPG for environmental impact reasons.

        • Gas servicing is not expensive and only needs doing at quite large intervals unless something is wrong. Tank validation costs $150 and will re-validate it for another 10 years, you dont need to replace it unless it has rusted.

        • "With your BBQ gas bottle it's cheaper to replace bottle rather than pay for the 10yr servicing" or you could just do one gas swap when it is out of date and then go back to getting it refilled.
