something that can hit above 12mbps.

    Probably should edit to add
    1) Upload vs Downloads speed . 12mbps upload ?
    2) What your Internet use will be for with this modem,
Id it's for gaming, skype , watching 4k netlfix… etc; I believe each would require somewhat different specs .

An option I would suggest, is a dual sim phone, especially it is just to increase data for 1 person (yourself). Just have data sim in simslot #2 .

      1) >12mbps download speed
      2) Download steam games

Dont have a dual sim phone, will get one next, but until then need a mobile wifi one.

      • If you have a CEX store (aka Entertainment Exchange) they sometimes have them cheap.
They used to be much better value though, they now buy an item for $3 and sell for $18 (used to buy for $10, sell for $15) .
You can still find some bargains listed there, if you do your research and check what item is worth. Getting stock in can, be a problem for them, because they don't pay enough buy-in price, so not many people want to sell.

I think delivery is $3 per item, if find a modem you want here
        https://au.webuy.com/search?sortBy=sellprice&sortOrder=asc&c…

        There are some for $5.
Not sure if need unlocked one, or if can maybe use one locked to vodafone.
If CEX isn't too far, could always buy, then if return same day get full refund.
I think online orders can still be sent back for full refund also, if it arrives, and you find item isn't suitable.

        • That sounds too easy!

          • @JTTheMan: If they still have returns for change of mind, on delivered items, YES Too easy.
It used to be I think 10days after receipt of posted item, you could tell them you wanted to return it (if not suitable).
            Postage paid returns also .
Or if have store nearby, check stock online first using link.

Should be able to order from online, then return in store (if not suitable for you) . Some stores will be rude about this though, and tell you to go online for return.

Warrawong CEX store (near Wollongong) is by far the best . Manager (Dion) is a top bloke. Best customer service ever IMHO. But any store should accept the return if required.

1 of the top bargain sections of their website, is old ipod docks. The ones that don't accept the lightening plug, are next to nothing to purchase.
I picked an great alarm clock, and 2 x ipod speaker set with inbuilt battery (like a 'boom box') . Both items were about $200 (10 years ago) and had excellent online reviews… Cost me under $10 each.

I'm in the exact same situation as you OP, hell I'm currently outside of my house using Huawei R216H Portable 4G modem as WiFi for my laptop.

Now, I don't know what to say about other modems but I can only give you the perspective of someone who's been using Kogan Mobile on R216H modem.

So, let's just cut to the chase; this modem isn't that good. I got it for $29 from Big W and this thing does the job okay ish, but at the same time it can't tap into the full speed of Vodafone 4G Network. I'll show you exactly what I mean with this.

Here, for comparison's sake, I'm going to do 3 internet speedtests on Kogan Mobile on my R216H vs 3 internet speedtests of Kogan Mobile speed BUT this time using my Google Pixel 3 XL hotspot

Kogan Mobile speed on Huawei R216H (tested on my laptop, speedtest.net):

Kogan Mobile speed test with my Pixel 3 XL hotspot (tested on my laptop, speedtest.net):

Now, I know the upload speed went down when I tested on the Pixel 3 XL but this might be because something happened in the middle of the testing with the upload speed and when I tried testing it back again on my R216H the upload speed went down as well after I tested the connection with Pixel 3 XL.

All tests are made against the same server (Exetel Sydney)

As you can see, my Pixel 3 Xl can achieve more than 2X the download speed achieved by the Huawei R216H modem (the upload speed usually is also significantly faster on my Pixel 3 XL).

This isn't too bad considering that right now I'm in an area with a really good signal but if I go somewhere else where the signal isn't that good or even at home, the difference in speed will be quite huge. For instance, at home, the R216H can only achieve a download speed of 1.5MB/s - 2.0 MB/s max when I'm downloading a huge file whereas the kogan mobile on my Pixel 3 XL can achieve around 3.8 - 5.4 MB/s max when downloading the same file.

I really don't like this R216H hahaha as you can probably tell but hey it's cheap so I can't ask for too much. In the future, I might try something much better like the Tp-Link m7450 but it's a lot more expensive of course, it's around $150 ish last time I checked?

    • Might have something to with carrier aggregation, if your Pixel 3 can combine 2 mobile channel bands and therefore show 2x the speed

  • I use a Nighthawk M1 on Telstra 4GX. Not sure if it'll achieve same speeds/reliability as me but I found that the cheaper pocket wifi devices tended to have issues if used for extended periods of time (prone to overheating/disconnecting, going into standby, weak battery, etc). It wasn't cheap at circa $300 but I've found it is able to get great signal (even when my iPhone/Pocophone don't), and even when using it over wifi or the inbuilt USB or Ethernet port, I'm able to get pretty good speeds in the city (200-300Mbps) when tested using Speedtest app/website. I also liked that when travelling, I could just plug it into a USB power socket and run it in a hotel room and create my own wifi.

Regarding using phone as a hotspot- I'm yet to find a reliable solution here with my iPhone X or Pocophone F1… both are great initially but they both get very hot, drains battery really fast, and seem to be unreliable when I have a lot of devices connected. The Pocophone F1 does do a bit better though in terms of not totally draining the battery but it does get warm enough to be a bit uncomfortable in my pocket.
