Does PayPal Cover Damaged Packages?

sigh I received an order today where the original padded bag has busted open and some of the parts have fallen out along the way. The remaining parts (and the dodgy envelope) were enclosed in a plastic bag from Aust post with an explanatory note printed on it. Just wondering if Paypal would cover this kind of thing?

Cheers

Generally yes. Basically it's just "goods not received" (or "significantly not as described" since it's missing parts). Even though it's obviously an Auspost problem, the seller is responsible for getting the product to you. I'd talk to the seller first, and then Paypal if that doesn't resolve it within the 60 days or so that you have to raise a claim with Paypal.

  • Thanks. Yeah just waiting to hear back from the seller to see what they say. I reckon the padded bag they used looks a bit recycled and the bottom gave way.

    • Should be pretty straightforward. Just a few things to double check: Make sure you've turned on Buyer Protection on your Paypal Account (no idea why it's not automatic but you do need to turn it on), check its T&Cs to make sure the purchase is protected (e.g. Gumtree purchases aren't protected), and make sure you claim within the 180 days time limit if the seller hasn't resolved it (including you seeing the money or a replacement on its way) within that time.

  • Thanks again, not sure if I had buyer protection enabled or not..it is now though. I have bought a few things from this mob before so hopefully it shouldn't be a hassle for them to sort it out.

If it was on ebay, then put in claim through ebay, go to listing and choose 'report an issue' then select option "item not as described" .
Item clearly did not arrive to you 'as described' .

IF the seller is really nice about it, and doesn't try to make excuses and make you drop the case … Then considering most of it is still there (and undamaged) , you could be nice about it also, and just have them send the missing parts that fell out etc.
Remind seller they may be able to claim through Aus Post, if damage happened during transit.
As I recall, without paying extra insurance, Aus Post has an amount to offer 'at their discretion' of like $50 or $100 max, that they can give seller. It's no definite thing, but seller should ask Aus Post.

      • Cheers, yeah it wasn't through Ebay but it was an Aussie store. I am only after the parts I didn't get, no need for them to resend the whole order. :) The missing parts would add up to about $80 or so. The envelope looks water damaged to me so maybe AP left it in a puddle overnight somewhere and that weakened it.

        • They'll probably get $50 back from Aus Post then, if they follow it up and ask. Especially since they are a store, so Aus Post knows they do alot of business there.

Definitely I would do this, if they are nice about things and make it easy for you in getting missing parts they owe you.

Keep all communication within ebay messages. You are 100% covered and will definitely win any claim, if the store is bad about it and refuses to do the right thing. The really sneaky ones tend to ask you to communicate outside of Ebay message system, then it becomes a hassle because it is your word against theirs.
If there's any dramas at all, ebay can quickly and easily review messages fr their system, and resolution is much faster.

Hopefully store just do the right thing and easy process for you :)

  • AU Post has crushed and ripped open so many of my parcels/envelopes it's ridiculous. This one was folded in quarters before being crammed in.

I use click & collect now, just to avoid their man-handling. PS: postbox was NOT locked.

    One example.

Yeah I think they have the monopoly on 457 visa workers. Not racist, just saying…..

Anyway all good here I heard back from the shop today and they are sending out the missing parts.
