How Much for a Plumber to Install a Dishwasher

I have purchased a dishwasher that I want to install in my rental house. The space for it in the kitchen is already prepared and is approximately 1.5 meters from the sink. I have received a quote from a plumber for $550 to install it. Just interested to hear from any people who have done similar if this is a fair price for this kind of work?

FYI, I paid ~$200 for a handyman to prepare the space. Quote from electrician to move electrical outlet is ~$120 and now the plumbing quote. So I am currently looking at almost $900 to have it installed. The dishwasher only cost $500!

Umm. It's like a 10 minute job. Cold water to splitter. Reconnect sink to split and connect to dishwasher.

Make hole in P trap. Attach dishwasher drain. Secure hose clamp.

    Done.

Let's allow $100 as a very generous call out. Add 5 minutes to survey. 5 minutes to unpack tools. 10 minutes to install, 5 minutes to test, 5 minutes to clean and pack.

    That's $900/hr.

      A million times this^

It’s not hard to do, you’ll learn something new and have a good Ozbargain story for how you saved a few bucks that you later blew on rechargeable batteries you have no need for!

    • This. Installed my own at my place, hardest part was going to by Bunnings to get some copper pipe, as the people who plumbed it originally had only tiny copper stubs sticking into the cabinet, and two flex hoses joined together. Had to make a riser so the tap to the dishwasher could work with the magic shutoff device that comes with lots of dishwashers now.

    • As @tshow said, very easy job. Please don't pay a plumber $550, that one does not want the job and is quoting high in case you bite. Get install and delivery or if you're even remotely handy, watch a few youtube videos to get you started.

If you can't get a better quote, go with it.
    I wouldn't do it myself; I'm hopeless.

That's a ridiculous amount of money. I paid $110 to have a dishwasher installed in my rental property, although this was a couple of years ago.

I didn't even know it needed a plumber?

Also doesn't the place delivering it just install it? Mine was done by the delivery guy.

    • Yeah who is delivering it? See what they will charge to install it.

There has obviously never been a dishwasher in the kitchen before, and it isn't fitted with the tap to connect the dishwasher to. Hence the need for a plumber or some diy.

        • That might explain the high quotation, if the plumber also needs to do all new fittings/hoses from existing pipes that don't currently accommodate a dishwasher.

@HighAndDry: Still seems way too high. I did my own and cost about $20 in parts and half an hour.

Airtasker. Make sure they are certified. Start with a low ball offer and the market will usually sort a fair price for you.

What did the handyman do to prepare the space? I can see why the electrical points needed to be moved, although it probably wasn't necessary unless you didn't have power point under any of the cabinets at all.

    Just curious.

    • Really just removed the existing kitchen cupboard that was there and cut the kickboard to accommodate. Think $200 was a bit of a rip off but I just didn't have the time unfortunately.

      • Did you ask your landlord for approval? Could be expensive otherwise if they want you to put the cupboard back in when you move out.

        • I think he is the landlord/owner.

        • I am the landlord. Sorry if that wasn't clear.

      • I guess depending on the way the benchtop is fixed to the cabinet, it can be a big job. If it is a modular then that's a lot of cash to move a box and make a cut.

  • I got a mate who is a plumber to do it (replace of an existing dishwasher) took him more than an hour (I had visions of doing it myself which were quickly put into place). To be fair it's a damn perfect job (leveled and sealed up tight). But yeah, apparently not a 10-minute job.

Note at work we had a 'handyman' install our dishwasher, he didn't put in a stop valve properly. There was 2 inches of water through the whole level and spilled onto the two floors below us, we were out of action for a week.

$550 seems quite high though, I guess it depends on how far they have to move the water if one hasn't been installed before?

I'd just get a few more quotes. If you don't get a lower one in 3-4 quotes then I guess 'that's what it costs?'

    • If a handyman cannot install a threaded stop valve properly…

      Levelling is just the feet.

Sealing is just a a few strips of weather seal and a kick-plate. All provided in more expensive units.

      • /shrugs my mate did it for a carton and it still took an hour.

It was an expensive dual drawer one but I don't think that really contributed to the time. The only thing not in the box was some wood I had to dig around and find because apparently, the feet don't extend to the full height of the spec even though the kick plate does.

          Ahhh. I see the problem.

He probably had the carton before starting work.

I've had a few installed over time in a few properties. Usually costs around $100. Get some more quotes or do it yourself its quite easy. Cheers!

I would not recommend from doing it yourself. I was in the same boat recently except it is our own home.

Plumbers were quoting from 300 upwards and then I remembered good guys. $119 later it was done by a licensed professional.

    Where are you based?

    • Based in Brisbane.

This is seriously the easiest job you can undertake in the kitchen. Read the manual. Watch a youtube video.

  • +1

$20 for part from Bunnings, YouTube and about 10 min to an hour of diy.

  • +1

$900 is a price for installing an air-conditioner which would include a full install, electrical work, plumbing work and gas!

Get him to itemize how he gets to $900.

I think I paid $400 to get plumbing for my dishwasher originally but I had hot and cold plumbed in with separate shut off valves. They were mounted right under the sink but it was old plumbing and he renovated all the pipes to code and updated the sink trap to take the dishwasher output.

Welcome to Australia…the land where tradies make an absolute killing! Unlike virtually anywhere else in the world.

  • you need a phone book also a phone and start looking up plumbers in your area and start ringing to get a quote until you find the cheapest, sometimes it helps if you let them know they can install on weekends, also ask them how they would like to be paid, cash, or by card,if you know what I mean, good luck
