Gaming Rig Recommendations

Hey all,

Just recently had my GPU die on me and thought about getting a new one but since my current system is about 5 years old I thought it might be time to update everything (unless you think I should carry on with my i7 4th gen, 16gb ram haha.)

Anyways I'm looking for people's opinions on this setup from JBHiFi (link below its the fourth one, i7 8700 GTX 1070) now as my brother works at JB he can get a staff discount bringing it down to $1615.

https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/dell-desktop-computers/inspi… It's the highest configuration on that link for reference

Fire away what everyone reckons about this or whether I should get my pc built. Cheers guys.

  • Check Umart or MSY. I just built Ryzen 5 2600. Very happy with gaming performance. Had i7 3770 Ryzen is much faster

    • I was worried about going AMD as friends have told me they don't tend to last as long. I'm not sure of the credibility of that especially in this day and age.

      • I think they ok, great bang for buck lots of headroom for over clocking so if you don’t do that they should last just fine. Good price on the system though. Can pickup a gtx 1060 pretty cheap umart / msy if the 3770 was running things ok. I was pretty happy with mine. But had a gtx 1080 and got an oculus rift. So the cpu was holding video card back a bit.

        • So if the GPU would be alright to upgrade, is there anyway to test the rest of the system to make sure theres no other parts going wrong, The GPU can boot but after some luck. So I don't wanna get a new GPU and find out the motherboard is fried or something.

          • @[Deactivated]: Normally pop in an old one and give it a go. Usually check if any mates have a card lying around PCI express has been around for a while now so plenty out there

Where abouts are you located. Sure many on here would have spare cards.

            • @renster72: That's a good point but I recently moved from Melbourne to South Gold coast so don't know many people that game here ahaha

              • @[Deactivated]: I’m north Gold Coast but working away for 2 more weeks. The other thing is your power supply do you have something decent?

                • @renster72: It's a corsair 650W 80+ Gold, figured that'd be the best part of my system since it's the newest

                  • @[Deactivated]: Yeah that’s decent, i’d see if you can get a loan gfx card and see if that’s all it is your brother doesn’t have anything you could try? I’m sure some Gold Coast ozbargainers would have some spares. I have a few but won’t be back on GC till 21st

                    • @renster72: Nah he isn't into gaming at all, i'm just using his discount haha. All good man, thanks for your assistance i'll see what I can come up with!

  • For something with a 1070 and 8700, it seems like a pretty good deal for $1600.

Even the AMD variant with 2700x and Rx 580 seems like a somewhat reasonable deal (prior to staff discount haha). For a pre-built at least.

    • So you think prebuilts are still alright to go with? Idk if motherboard is something to be concerned about since I can't find what they are using.

  • What sort of games/monitor are you wanting to run? Current rig should ok for less demanding games at 1080p, non-ultra settings.

    • as far as monitor goes, I just use an old samsung S24B350. Haven't needed much more than that to be honest but I will be running alot of photo editing programs and games will be like CSGO, Dota 2, DoW2 that kind of stuff.

If it is going to be those games, do you need a new rig?

      • CSGO, Dota 2, DoW2 that kind of stuff.

These games run on pretty much any kind of system, you only need a mid-range GPU like a Radeon RX570 ($200) or a GTX 1060. ($300)

        • as I said to Axel, I will be playing games like gta v, Anthem and battlefield but just listed the games I commonly play.

  • Buy an RTX 2060 (more little more powerful than GTX 1070) and wait for Ryzen 3000 which has already shown to beat intel's best offering the 9900k in multicore while using less power.

    • At the cost I can get a 2060 for, Wouldn't I be better off just going the extra mile and getting an entirely new system?

RTX 2060 sell for as low as $549

Nevermind just saw the games you play, just buy a RX 570 for $200 and stick with what you got a while longer.

Those games would run on a literal toaster the dell PC is massively overkill for those games.
I assumed you wanted 1080p 144hz AAA gaming or something going by the dell specs.

just chuck in rtx2080 in current rig and be done with it

much better than getting a new rig

  • get an 570 8gb or 580 8gb and a new psu.

    • Any reason I'd get a new psu? I'm more worried about the motherboard on my current setup whether that's slowly frying.
