Correct. These are more than useless. They just trap oil and dirt and do nothing to ventilate the area above the cooktop. Anyone who uses this for a renovation might as well just put a cardboard cutout in its place. Just as effective.
Good for slight reduction in cooking smells and to keep the fumes slightly more contained.
But you're spot on that it doesn't actually do anything to remove aerosols. It just vents into the ceiling/cabinet space, which is questionable because the fan doesn't actually have enough power for static push into an unventilated space.
I've converted two crappy old rangehoods to proper roof mounted motors. Can confirm that ceiling space is just soaked in cooking oil.
Trapping oil might be what it’s for. I live in an apartment and it just circulates the air back. The filters however need to be changed every few months to be effective, which is the more expensive bit.
Good for shooting smoke right into your eyes and hair from the vent. Don’t waste money on it.
