Recommend a Cheap Dual Sim Phone for an Optus and Telstra Sim Overseas

Family travelling to Europe. Will get travel sims for wife and my iPhones.

Need a cheap dual sim phone to put our Optus and telstra sims in to receive sms’. Data roaming switched off, and calls will be forwarded to the travel sims

Something cheap and simple to setup is key. Long battery life is also useful.

I see a lot of cheap android phones on eBay which I’m nervous about how easy they might be to setup for this task. I’m a long time in the iOS ecosystem and only android experience is in my mibox media player

    Umidigi One. You can get it a hair over $200 with current eBay 10% code or wait for a better deal. Lots of bands (including Band 28!), dual 4G sim, 4GB ram, etc. The One has 32GB of memory, the more expensive One Pro has 64GB of memory, wireless charging, and NFC (but a slightly smaller battery capacity).

    Bought my son one, it works well enough. Comes with a screen protector (careful taking off the screen protector protector, else the screen protector itself will peel right off) and a case (it's thin and not that great, but it looks decent and is free).

    Edit: If you only need it to receive SMS messages, perhaps consider leaving a spare phone in Australia that's setup to forward SMS to email? If you have someone you trust, leave it with them and they can reboot the phone if it goes wonky. Else it's just set and forget. You do have to make sure it works well before you leave, such apps may need some tinkering with battery management options (you want the phone to immediately wake-up and pass the message to the app even if it's in deep-sleep).

    Nokia seems like a better choice due to durability and reviews
