What to Do with a PSP Street (PSP-E1002)

The perks of apartment living means that I can see what other tenants dump in the common trash room. The other night while I took my rubbish out, I saw an open box in the trash room which had a bunch of old power and USB cables, an old and crappy bluetooth speaker, and various odds and ends. Buried beneath that stuff was a retail Sony PSP box which I took out to have a look, when I noticed that it had a bit of weight to it. Opened it up and saw a barely used PSP Street, power supply, and the USB cable. And when I say barely used, this thing had no scratches or scuff marks, pretty much in near new condition. Took it back home and hooked up the power supply, the PSP charges and it turns on and works!

So I did some research and found the PSP Street is the crappier version of the standard PSP - mono speaker, no TV-out and no WiFi. It can be modded to have emulators installed (it has firmware 6.60). Some people have sold the PSP Street on eBay for around $100; and I have seen the better PSP-3000 (import version from Japan) selling for around AUD$140-150.

My question is, should I sell the PSP Street and using the profits from that sale, add a bit extra and buy an import PSP-3000 as an upgrade? Or should I just be happy with a freebie and mod the heck out of it and use it to play retro games?

As an aside, I currently have a Wii and Xbox 360 but looking to upgrade to Xbox One X - so I'm not in the Sony gaming ecosystem. I bought a few PSP games from Cash Converters today for a few dollars just to see if the PSP worked 100% (it does). Sorry for the long story - I've never found anything this good before so I'm pretty excited!

    Be happy with the freebie.

Friend, most cool psp functionality is moot these days due to smartphones. That said the psp is a great portable ps1 and you can always play the great library of games you have "backed up".

I personally wouldn't upgrade to a 3000, not unless you really want to get into psp games like monster hunter and taiko / project diva. If you do plan on upgrading get a vita instead. They can play all psp games as well and if you get the right model youll have a nice oled display.

I'm a casual gamer so I'm not planning on getting into PSP games. Modding it to play "backed up" games and occasionally spending a few bucks on 2nd hand games would probably be good enough for me.

Being happy with the freebie is a good advice. Thank you xuqi and Siddeeqi.

  • Oh man my PSP 2000 sits in a box in my Cupboard. Haven't used it in years. My Vita sits on my shelf and I only play Killzone Mercenary on it.

I wish Sony would make another true handheld console that plays games all the way to PS4.

Not into Nintendo so the switch is not for me.

LOL sorry I added nothing to your post, just a trip down memory lane.

  • The PSP is great for emulation. Mine has Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, NES, SNES, Mega Drive, Master System, Turbo Grafx 16, Nintendo 64 (only a handful of games are playable) and heaps of PSP and PS1 games. A phone cant beat physical, tactile buttons. IMO, the PSP is the most cost effective way to retro game on the go.

  • I had both the 1000 and the 2000 but never heard it referred to as the "psp street" before.

There was a very good reason why I dumped the 1000 for the 2000 and anyone playing it for long hours will soon find out. It's because it's as heavy as a brick.

The 2/3000 being one third lighter is really worth the extra couple of bucks in my opinion.

    • The PSP Street was released after 3000 as the 'budget-conscious' version of the PSP. It had no WiFi, no TV-out, a single mono speaker, and the battery was not removable. I don't know how much cheaper it was compared to the 3000.

      • That explains it, forget what I said.

  • I'd sell it, but not to buy a PSP 3000.
If you want a PSP just use it. By the way you can mod it and get every game released for it for free, same with your Wii and X360. (and the Switch if you get one)
