  • I suggest giving this a read https://www.pointhacks.com.au/amex-changes-apr-2019/

If you currently have a large balance of Membership Rewards points, you may want to hold off. American Express has given five months’ notice and there may be transfer bonuses introduced in the meantime, so you would not want to miss out on them by speculatively transferring your points out to a partner program/s.

There is no need to do anything about the cards in your wallet right now. If eventually you are considering the cards you have in your wallet in light of these changes, it may be worth giving American Express a call first to see if there is a more appropriate card for you based on your spending patterns.

  • Assuming you don't have a Platinum Charge card, then you wouldn't have the option to transfer to QFF normally, so not sure why you would now.

    • Asking if there is a way regardless of the changes occurring

      • not possible, unless you sell your points and then buy QFF points through some other means

  • Yes there is a way but it is not a straight forward process.

    1) Convert your points to SPG points @ 2/3 rate (166667 SPG) which is equivalent to 3 times Marriott points (500,000 Marriott MP). SPG and Marriott are now one company. Or Simply 250k Amex points equals 500k Marriott Points. Please open an account with SPG.
    2) Convert Marriott points to Qantas Points which is divide by 3. To get better value to convert Marriott Points to Qantas in a group of 60,000 so that you get a 5000 bonus Qantas points.
    = 60k MP = 20k QFF + 5k bonus QFF = 25,000 QFF
    = 500,000 MP = 8* (60,000 + 5000) = 200,000 QFF plus a spare of 20,000 MP

The bottom line for 250k Amex points you get 200k QFF points and 20,000 Marriott Points (MP).

If you are Ok with Cathay Pacific, I would convert into Asia Miles because they charge fewer taxes for points based booking.

    • going by dollar value at 1c per qff point and MR gives i think 1.7 cent per point - so might be better to just get $$ before mid April

Convert your points to SPG points @ 2/3 rate (166667 SPG)

There is no such thing as SPG points now, it's all Marriott Reward points now. The SPG program and hence SPG points no longer exists.

The transfer rate is 3 Amex Points = 2 Marriot Reward points. So your suggestion is not going to work.

    • Hmm I can see that i can transfer 250k amex points to SPG and get 166667 SPG.

When I log in into mariott and want to transfer 166667 SPG to Qantas it gives me only 55 555 points!

      What am I doing wrong?

      • What am I doing wrong?

        You're not doing anything wrong.

Amex Transfers to Marriott Rewards at 3:2 (250k Amex points = 166667 Marriott points). Marriott then transfers to QFF at 3:1.

Read my post above, there is no such thing as SPG or SPG points anymore. When Marriott Rewards and SPG merged last year, SPG ceased to exist. The Amex portal still says that you are transferring to SPG, this is not correct, its transferring to Marriott Rewards.

        • You're not doing anything wrong.

          Ok thanx for comfirmation
