Dates for Snowy Mountain Ski Season

My relatives want to visit australia and go to Snowy Mountain. They would like to try skiing.
They've asked me when are the dates for full snow. Anyone knows here? I know its around July to August but I think their schedule is tight so dates would be preferable. Thanks!

Peak is usually July-August, and generally the snow should be pretty good by then.

Then again, if they've never skied before, there should be enough to do some snowplay.

If you want a totally white winter wonderland, August is your bet.

    • Hi thx, so would first week august be good to tell them?
They're a family with 4 young kids this will be their first ski attempt lol, that will go well.
The Dad does seemed to want the full white wonderland snow, hence the question to me who's never seen snow.

        First week August is good.

How long are they staying? Day trip or staying a few nights?

If staying, given that's peak period expect to pay top dollar for accommodation. To save some money going mid-week (midweek means Sun night to Thurs night) tend to be a bit cheaper.

I'm not too familiar with Snowy Mountain so you're on your own on which lodge is good.

        • 1st or 2nd week of August is my go to.

What state are you in OP? (I’m guessing NSW)

Day trip or spend a couple of days there?

I love skiing but it’s expensive and that does put people off. There really aren’t bargains to be had but sometimes going from Tuesday to Friday for example can be cheaper.

          • @Randxyz123: Being beginners, a good suggestion to save money is to go to Dinner Plain, which is 15 min from Mt Hotham. Accomodation is cheaper, and there's a beginner slope you can get on for half the price of Hotham's lift tickets. You can get lessons there too.

It doesn't have as much going as Mt Hotham itself but you also save on parking ($40 a day to park at Hotham). You can still go to Hotham on a couple of days to check it out of course - again, remember the parking charge (FAQ here).

Save more money by foregoing downhill skiing and just do cross-country skiing. Easier to pick up (it's not quite as fast/daunting; a school-trip favourite), no lift-ticket required. You could walk into Mt Hotham (bypassing parking charge) from Dinner Plain, it's "only" 10km. Of course there's shorter trails for the uninitiated…

One more thing: not sure about Snowy Mountain, but you could drive up Mt Hotham/Dinner Plain in ANY CAR. FWD, RWD, AWD, 4WD all welcome. You will need to carry chains at all times during the ski-season, regardless of whether you need them or not (~$800 fine applies + chain hire + cost of bringing chains to you. And that's assuming you get stopped before you run into trouble; ie skidded off the road). Applies also to 4WD/AWD.

    • if they've never skied before

Skiing is easy to pick up. Start them on a flat or slight slope and work their up from there.

  • I think something like June long weekend to October long weekend is official ski season

      Going in June is tricky.

Last year on Queen's b'day (official start to the skiing season) there was literally no snow on some resorts.

Mt Buller was very proud to have a ski lift open, but it was literally a strip of snow they collected and put together so you can have a "run".

So yes, on good years you might get a bit of snow, but I'd avoid June unless you are happy to check the next week's snow forecast.
