Best Suit in Melbourne for under $500

Hi, my old suit from Bell and Barnett ripped after only 7 months.
Any recommendations for a good suit in the Melbourne area for under $500
i am open to a private aisan tailor, but have no idea of any good ones

  • Mj Bale?

    • Is this a bad attempt at sock-puppeting for MJ Bale? I don't even..

      • i think used to have a suit from them but i lost it

    • The quality of MJ Bale's garments has apparently gone massively downhill over the past year or so, at least according to members of the Australian MFA subreddit.

Go to david Jones. Anything from Anthony Squires, Van Heusen will be good. Take a look at Oxford as well, they have good quality suits there too.

    • I purchased 2 from Van Heusen last year for 299. Pretty good suits if you look after them.

Go back to the seller of your suit and demand some recompense

  • anyone orderd from instichu?

    • Yes, used the Sydney one quite a few times with good results - in terms of fit and quality.
If you can, go in and get measured by them

Prices seem to go up each year so not sure if you can still pick up a 2pc suit for $500

    • They're excellent at writing or sourcing fake reviews: https://www.reddit.com/r/AustralianMFA/comments/831f2i/instiā€¦

  • There's a Ted baker outlet around Thornbury where I've sourced some lovely wedding suits in the past around that price. Ihaven't been there in some time, so it's possible prices aren't so accessible now though.

    • Yeah check the outlets if you are a non-standard size. You'll get good deals there.

Its not about the quality of the suit, its the quality of the fit. Get a cheap suit, then get it tailored to fit you properly. Makes a world of difference.

  • MJ Bale do pretty serviceable suits for under that, if you're not too unusual in size they should be a decent fit off the rack.

I prefer Charles Tyrwhitt for non-tailored now, they are probably better quality per dollar and most options last a good long time of regular wear. There is currently a 14% off code I think DIMAU19 or something like that, for valentines day.

tbh - you're not going to get a good suit for less than 500.

Any suit you buy for 500 or less will rip again in 7 months.

How often will you wear the suit?

    • every week

    • Sigh. While you often get what you pay for, there is plenty of quality wool suiting at or under the $500 mark with half-canvas construction that will last longer than two years.

      • Guess it all comes down to personal preference and experience. Which ones do you like?

        • MJ Bale, Bell & Barnett and TM Lewin are all good choices.

  • Suitsupply have their basic range at around this price. Good value. Free shipping and returns so you can find your perfect fit

  • Interesting; my Bell & Barnett suit has lasted me over five years now (worn 2-3 times a week).

  • How were they to deal with when you sought remediation pursuant to the ACL?
