Please Suggest Me a USB-C Hard Drive for Backups

I am looking for two portable USB-C drives which I intend to use for weekly backups. I have done some Google-ing and zeroed out Lacie 5 TB which is at $226.57 (after all discounts except cashrewards/shopback).

I use a MacBook Pro and this seems to be a fair deal to me, but I am not sure about the performance. Is there anything better in a similar price range?

Thanks in advance.

  • Samsung T5 series…. What size do you want? They come in many 256gb - 2TB, so you should be covered.

    • I am after 5 TB disks. My current documents are 3 TB, so 5 TB should be enough for another 4-5 years.

I can't suggest a particular brand but one thing I can say is if you are really serious about backup to USB HDD then you should have two. What happens if your only 5TB drive completely stuffs up? Whenever I do buy a new HDD I buy two and use the second one for a fortnight or montly entire backup. Relying on one just one drive for a weekly backup solution is risky.

Gah! Sorry. Should ban myself from ozbargain replies before my 8am caffeine fix

      • Make sure you keep them in 2 physical locations a well, so a fire or similar doesn't destroy both copies.

  • You could also grab yourself something like this (USB3.0) to open up your options (since it's only for backups).. I agree with @LikeMike above that it's worth getting two drives for backup.

Or get a portable USB-C drive and then a desktop one with an adaptor above for home use, to keep costs down and have two backup media - eg. desktop: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/seagate-6t…

  • Get a normal portable HDD and then buy whatever cable/adaptor you need to make it USB C.
