I am looking to get my son a Gopro hero white for his 10th birthday.
Some other relatives might also get a chest or head strap, too.

If you really want to save then get the hero (2018) and flash the firmware to a 5 black.
Currently the best deal on this is $285 on Amazon. Does anyone know if we can get it cheaper? Was $200 over Xmas I believe.
Was $180 or $190 not too long ago either.
Side by side, the only visible difference between the 5 Black is the number '5' on the side and even the GoPro app recognises it as a 5 blackI think I'd jump on it if it was that price again, I don't really need one but have wanted one for a while now. Been looking at the yi 4k plus too.
What's your son going to use the GoPro for?

Hero 7 White and Silver front lens glass is fitted to the casing and cannot be easily changed as the older ones.
I found this out after I bought one, unfortunately. so if you scratch or break the front glass it's hard to replace :(
You can change the battery on the 5, but not the 7 white. (Assuming you don't mean the 5 session)
Differences are that the 7 white doesn't have any 4k options; 5 black has 4k30. 7 white doesn't have GPS either.
7 has the newer chipset/cmos so slightly better image quality (in terms of colour accuracy) even though it's limited to 1080p or 1440p
Personally I would take the 5 black over the 7 white because of the 4k and GPS
I would agree a chest strap and maybe selfie stick would be good to get him started
Don't forget the 64GB or 128GB microSD cards for $20/$30 (make sure they are at least U1 rated)
