Programmable/Generic Mercedes Benz Remote Replacement?

So a friend of mine locked himself out of his car stupidly but thankfully we were able to get back in by opening up the busted up car remote.

He is going to get some spare keys made on Monday but a house mate was talking about some device like a programmable car remote that can mimic his current busted up remote and that we could program it using our current car remote to in a sense transfer the radio signals that the current car remote emits onto basically a clone mimic remote.

I am not the best with cars or remotes for that matter so came to ask if any body knows more about this than I currently do.

Same house mate said they might be available at jay car for $30 but me being part of this great ozb community know we can beat that easily either with just better deals or I will use ali express or ebay.

It is a very old mercedes benz I honestly am not sure which model as I don't really like getting too involved with this person as they are an infinite supply of problems but I know that he won't be able to do it himself so here I am as per usual.. middle aged adults acting like children situation here so gotta spoon feed him everything and his friends.

TL;DR

Need to replace friends old mercedes benz remote as cheaply as possible since one of the buttons underneath is basically missing the printed circuit board contact but can still activate it with a screwdriver or metal so looking for the name of the product to look for and possibly cheap options

Otherwise if this expense becomes too ridiculous I will just let him stick with just his keys because I ain't made of time energy and money unfortunately

  • AFAIK car remotes are rolling code so it's not as simple as mimicking the radio signal.
Having said that, I've heard of people getting remotes replaced from automotive locksmiths. Just stop by and ask next time you see one at a shopping centre.
Another idea is if you can buy the exact looking remote on ebay, or just the shell if it's cheaper, then put the internal into the new shell.

    • Shell is fine it is the printed circuit board that is missing a part for one of the buttons.

Two out of three buttons have all the parts to make the contact to make the closed circuit to make whatever signal comes out at the end of it so we can technically still use the remote but it requires some tinkering and diying.

So am now trying to find the programmable remote that my housemate was mentioning.. yeah no idea if this even exists I mean I am sure it does but no idea what the name is yet atm.

Might give some car shop places a call tomorrow and see if they know what I am talking about.

      • Oh, I see. Maybe you can buy the same button and solder it back on? Would most likely be cheaper than buying a whole remote. (If you don't have to also buy a solder and soldering iron)

    • Edit: Cannot read.

  • because I ain't made of time energy and money unfortunately

What are you made of then?

    • If current science is to be believed.. quarks and atoms but I a bit rusty on the current accepted scripture atm.

    • Mostly water!

  • Depends on if it is an old Merc with a genuine remote or an aftermarket remote.

If genuine, no, you can’t just go down to Jaycar and buy an off the sheff replacement remote. Remotes just pump out codes. It’s up to the ecu in the car to accept that code or not. You can clone remotes, but it isn’t as easy as popping into Jaycar for this “magic” remote. If it’s a genuine remote that came with the car from the factory, then just go to an automotive locksmith and get them to sell you a new one.

If it’s old AND aftermarket… good luck, You’re gonna need it. In that’s the case, it might be easier to just replace the remote system. The other thing you can do is try and find out who made it and go back to that manufacturer and see if a: they still exist and b: can sell you a new remote and tell you how to code it to the unit in the car.

    • 99% sure it is genuine and not aftermarket but could just be a very nice looking aftermarket maybe.

      • Of it’s a genuine remote, I’ll save you the trouble of looking for a “Jaycar magic key.” There is no remote that you can buy that will just clone the one you have. If anyone sold a device like that, that could just clone/mimic a car remote, you could just buy one and steal anyone’s car and it just isn’t that easy.

Don’t buy a genuine remote, it will end up being way too expensive. You can get aftermarket remotes that will replace genuine remotes, but they will need to be programmed to the car. Sometimes you get lucky with a vehicle and all you need to do is a set of procedures to put the car into programming mode, sometimes you need to plug into the cars diagnostic port to get the car the learn it that way.

Honestly, you’re friends are wrong. For a MB there will be no cheap, $30 shortcut. Ring an automotive locksmith and ask them or take a photo of the remote and ask this question on a specialist MB forum.

All cars are different. Get your housemate to do some research on a Mercedes forum. Some cars can program remotes with a special key sequence, some can't.

Without that basic info no-one is going to be able to help your housemate. It sounds like you don't want to help your housemate so I don't know why you're posting here for them?

    • He does want to help, just with the least effort possible. He's got a lot on his plate; check his recent post history.
