Not Many Women about OZB?

Occurred to me that not many girly deals make the front page. Not many handbags and Lady Gillette or whatever, seems to be mostly deals guys would be into.

I like the deals that get posted. Not interested in handbags or Lady Gillette.
Women like Eneloops and Xiaomi too, ya know.

    • +1

Eneloop interest doesn't count due to clever rainbow glitter marketing.

      • I think you're forgetting that Eneloops power a girl's best friend.

        *bzzzzzzzzzz*

        • That didn't deserve a neg. Eneloop-powered ones are long gone. The latest, I've been told, are qi enabled. How were you to know?

        • Oh-oh…

    • Same!

Cause all we simple women folk like are lady razors and handbags…

    • +15

Because real lady ozbargainers buy men's razors.

      • +9

No pink tax on men’s razors…

      • Real lady OzBargainers don't use any razors…

    (profanity) is not cheap.

Get Ozboyfriend to pay for it.

My missus sometime uses my account. She had her own for years but then deleted it after having a tiff with another female ozbargainer. I'm pretty sure that one of the mods is also female. There are heaps of women around. They are just very good at blending in .

    • Sames. I am both sexes.

Pretty sure my staff have accidentally used my username for comments as I leave it logged on. Probably not because we're all very disciplined and do not ozbargain at work. (I'd get a laugh if someone is looking over my shoulder)

Or I am a loner in a cabin in the woods. With FTTP. And a few personalities.

      • I thought you were my GP. I really did.You sound so much like him. That would have been awkward. But loner in a cabin in the woods with DID is fine.

        • +2

I think one of my personalities may be.

      Mocha is female.

Do you mean Moocher? Yes, she is.

Is wiki planning on coming back to ozb? Always found myself invested every time you guys post.

      • +2

The short answer is nope. The long answer is "No way! I don't have time for it anymore and you (JJB) were my favourite ozbargainer anyway." Ohhh! 😊

Having attended many meetups there are definitely a good portion of girls, but predominately guys.

Unfortunately a lot of guys here are self conscious and make the typical comments when a moisturiser is posted. Turns you off posting tbh.

    • +1

      i use moisturiser

    • +7

Yup, I agree on that one. Some people need to grow up.

    • +1

There is definitely an issue with many of the comments by guys on this site.

Way too many man-baby's still rocking around in their nappy.

I think people tend to think that other people who share the same interests/style/thoughts as them, must be the same gender.
I know I am sometimes surprised to discover somebody posting is a different gender to what I had imagined.
But deals like groceries, exercise gear, giftcards, travel, personal care are all pretty gender neutral (5 of the top 7 deals at the moment).
And the other top deals (IT stuff and computer games) aren't especially strongly gendered either.

If you see deals for Colgate and Deliveroo and the latest PC game release as masculine, it might say more about how you view things, than the gender of the posters.

Not necessarily. In 2015, the ozbargainer, previously known as wicket1120, was hounded by a few women and falsely accused of being a man. She's not and never was. I should know, as she gave birth ,naturally should I add, to my 3 kids.

    I miss PJC

    • What happened to batgirl? I was away for a while.

The great watch deal poster purge of 2018 is what happened…

A true tragedy of epic scale, but be brave as somehow we shall all soldier on…

  • I think a girl posted a deal to the sony noise cancelling headphones the other week

Google feed? recommended Ozbargain to one of my best friends girlfriend, it was a lipstick deal on Ozbargain.
It's funniest story, once we became friends on Facebook Google recommend the Ozbargain deal in her feed, she and her boyfriend instantly knew it was because of me lol, I'm the only Ozbargainer out of my friends lol.

    Edit:

    Not Many Women about OZB?

Your telling me I've got "Any Ozbargainer ladies on here?" on my Tinder profile!
Impossible to meet an Ozbargainer lady these days!

My ex is. You'd get on well :)

My partner has expensive taste and will always pick the most expensive item. However our budget doesn't always allow for those purchases. So she will look for bargains and is happy to tell her friends she got one. Girls also like something cheaper than what they would normally have to pay for and share as they like the item as well. So not surprised they would be in here. Also they may like the luxury brands, but they don't always want to pay full price, they want the cache of having it. ImO

I know you said you were generalising but no one in my circle tries to one up each other and we’re always more enthusiastic about sharing a bargain than paying full price. I bought my friend a cookbook the other day and left the price tag on it so she could see it had been reduced from $9 to 90 cents. I think she was more impressed with the bargain than the book!

      • +2

How many of your circle read OzBargain?

        • Most of them actually! It’s because I’m constantly sending them links to bargains so they’ve all started reading it too.

          • @burtie: So your anecdote is subject to very significant selection bias.

            • +1

@Scrooge McDuck: This entire forum thread itself has inherent selection bias. "Not Many Women about OZB?" - it's basically an invitation for the very few females to make their voices heard hence selection bias.

If it was an unbiased survey of the OzBargain demographic, 90% to 95% male would be my guess. Maybe as high as 98%. And about half of those males would be Asian of Chinese descent. Based on the demographic of Australia in general, Asian males would be over-represented.

Sorry, I would like to retract my previous statement. Females are perfect and flawless. They say that there is no such thing as perfect. Females are the exception to that rule.

      • Sorry, I would like to retract my previous statement. Females are imperfect and flawed. They say that there is no such thing as perfect. Females prove that rule.

    • You really do need to take a break from those networked games champ.

Is the poll asking what gender you are or what gender deals your prefer?

  • Woolfenstein Disabled User 149420 was a polarising member, but I do miss her posts.

A true ozbargain lady will buy whichever razor is the best value, regardless of how many butterflies are on the handle.

It's very hard to profile people on OzBargain.

But I think I know why my personal bias tends to suggest there are more males than females on OzBargain.

Compared with almost any other message board, it's actually remarkable how little self-deprecating humour exists on OzBargain. It's even more remarkable how often I see stupid yet innocent jokes on OzBargain get downvoted rather than ignored.

Being regularly argumentative and lacking Theory of Mind (ToM) is often associated with the stereotype of high functioning Autistic Spectrum Disorder, or classic "Asperger's" (which was dropped as its own diagnosis from the DSM). Since there's a 4:1 ratio of males to females diagnosed with this condition, in turn, many people may associate OzBargain with an archetypally male personality trait (whether it's true or not).

    • +1

Extrapolating my sample of n= 32-ish ozbargainers that my wife and I have met in the wild , I would say that between 30% to 40% of ozbargainers are female.

The above poll seem to suggest an even greater percentage.

  • +6

From the meet ups, the OzBargain demographic is mostly Asian males.

    • I would've guessed half, at most. Were there any women?

      • Yes. There's some pics floating around ozbargain.
