Looking for a Chromebook - Budget $600

Haven’t owned a laptop in years so I went into JB to try a few and windows 10 looked like the aftermath of an air strike so I’ve decided on a Chromebook.

I like the design and feel of the Samsung Chromebook Plus, Acer Chromebook 12/13/14, Asus Chromebook etc.

Nothing chunky was hoping for one of the slimmer, cleaner & lighter designs. Anything 11-14” would suit.

Will be used for:

  • web browsing/email
  • google docs
  • Netflix
  • Streaming sports
  • YouTube

I’m Assuming a 4gb RAM, 34/64gb mmc will suit this (unsure on processor), but having never owned a Chromebook i would like some help.

Hoping to spend $400-600, any suggestions guys?

That amount could buy you a normal Windows 10 laptop. Is there a reason why you need it to be a Chromebook?

Edit: nevermind. I just saw your reference to the Windows 10 airstrike.

With the amount of bloatware that comes pre-installed with retail devices, I'm not surprised more and more people are leaning towards a cleaner OS such as that offered on a Chromebook.

Man even the ones on display at JB were already running slow

  • I know you have a budget, but if you can stretch it a little more go for this.

I have one which I got for $613.95 when the Black Friday sales were on. Couldn't be happier for what I use mine for, bit of browsing, NBA League pass and youtube.

    • Yeah I liked this but couldn’t justify $800 for a Chromebook, I saw this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N5G5PG2 which is $486 USD incl shipping - but wasn’t sure if would come with an Australian plug?

Cashrewards 5% = under $700 or wait for sales. Buying form US may end up the same or more depending on shipping charges. Can always buy an AU adaptor.

      • At least $800 is easier to justify for a Chromebook compared to a Windows PC. Chromebooks are much better.

I got a Samsung Chromebook Pro as a gift for a friend a little while ago and it's been excellent. It came to AUD$650 on Amazon when it was on sale.

  • Samsung Chromebook Plus v2 was ~AU $522 delivered from B&H Photo Video 2 weeks ago, and it's a nice 2-in-1 device with 1920x1200 12.2" display, pen input, 4GB RAM, 32GB eMMC, etc. Too bad the promotion has ended, and now it's a bit less than AU $600 delivered from Amazon US.

    • Bummer, still pretty cheap though. I like the Asus C302CA but I think I’ll be taking the Chromebook plus V2 you’ve just linked considering it’s $200 less- Cheers mate

Is there any disadvantage to shopping on the US Amazon as opposed to AUS? Am I right by assuming USB-C will come without a power supply so I can just plug it into an aus wall socket? Or should I spend the extra on the Australian store to get the right plug?

You'll need those travel adapter as those would come with Type A plugs. Amazon also handles return well. I bought a Asus Chromebook back in 2015, and one of the keys is not working. Send it back to Amazon and they refund the postage.

        • Ah I understand thanks.
If I purchase the item off amazon AUS will it come with an Australian plug, even if it comes from the US warehouse? Apologies with questions haven’t bought a laptop in years!

@Sm91: No. Amazon US computers / electronics would have type A plug (vs type I used in Australia).
