Is an Apple Watch Worth It?

I'm thinking of getting an Apple Watch (Series 2) from eBay for around $200-$300.

I've never owned one before so if you've owned one before or currently own one - are they worth getting?

I do a bit of running (currently with iPhone using Spotify and Nike app) and I need a watch anyway for football coaching. I also play football so running will occur less frequently due to training twice a week, so a cheap watch with a stopwatch would suffice for coaching.

Any advice appreciated.

  • They are defiantly not a necessary purchase, however, I say go for it if you have the money lying around.

  • They're alright, no different to any other watch IMO, you honestly wont use 3/4 of the features you think you will because you phone is just way more convenient to use.

That said for $200-300 its easy to spend a similar amount on a non smart watch so why not go smart. Only important thing is don't get a series 0 or it will be too slow to do anything.

    • I’ve series 0 and it’s works alright, good for Apple Pay, notifications, heartbeat but I don’t play with it at all just a few clicks where needed.

  • I got one for xmas 2018, I didn't want one but went with it as it was a gift. After just over a year I would say not worth it for me. I always have my phone with me. For my wife who isn't allowed her phone at work it is good as she can be on the air for emergency calls from school.

I used to own a Series 2 Apple Watch alongside an iPhone 8 Plus before making a switch to Android. To be honest, I actually quite enjoyed it. Came in handy for me as I'd rely on it for calendar appointments, reminders, and yeah sport tracking. It was probably the best way I've had to keep my fitness accountable lol. Some of the drawbacks are the older SoC and it can lag a bit more than I'd like but for the money, it's not the worst investment, especially where your health is concerned. If you can get one for around $200 and under, it's worth it imo. I'd definitely get one if I ever went back to iOS

  • Depends on how you use it tbh. I've had Apple Watch Series 1 SS version (bought second hand). I still haven't find the need to upgrade. Apart from looking at time, I use it to get notifications, answer call and to ping my phone when I misplace it somewhere in the house (once I found my phone dropped in a huge park, used the bluetooth connections and ping to play cold&hot game with the phone)…. also to move to next song when I can't easily access the phone, or to put phone on silent when, or to start a timer while im in the kitchen. Apart from that nothing else too significant.. and really Series 1 does all these no problem.

I actually love it and just can't imagine wearing a non-smartwatch watch for day to days. But then some people don't mind doing everything on the phone. I just prefer to put the phone down as much as I can.

  • If you're asking is it an accurate measuring device for fitness the answer is no.

  • I have a garmin semi-smart watch. It's pretty good seeing when you get an email or a message without getting your phone out, plus you can check the weather and, uh, the time haha. I think it is worthwhile having.

  • No, I don’t think so.

There’s not enough more usability than just a smart phone IMO/IME to justify its price.

Maybe an older second hand one, but even then, at least for me there are more worthy things that I could be spending the money on.

For $300 you will nearly be able to afford a S3 which is several times faster and you should purchase it if you can stretch your budget.

I've seen LTE S3 go for $350 on gumtree.

I have a garmin forerunner and am apple watch with cellular. I've reverted back to the garmin for running. The gps isn't accurate, the battery lasts a fraction of the time, and you can't adjust things like layout and measurements.

It's nice as a "going out" watch, but I'll be getting another garmin next time.

    • Same. I have both and have gone back to my garmin for running. The physical buttons on my garmin is easier to use and more intuitive when on the move. Plus the need to charge the apple watch every day compared to twice a week for my garmin annoyed me

I've owned two apple watches (seri 1 - 2) so far. And would I recommend it to anyone? Yes, if you have money lying around not doing anything. No, if you think your hard earned money should be appreciated. I mean they are alright. They're good in term of smartwatches, but do you really need those features that were advertised all over the Apple website? I don't know. It's really up to you. Most of the time I put the watch on me and then I just forget that my watch is an Apple watch because all I need from it is to check the time and maybe notifications sometimes. So after a year of owning them, I think they were not worth the money I paid as they got to the point that was too slow to do anything, even just waking up from black screen. I ended up buying a fitbit alta hr which gives me the same uses (checking time and notifications) and is $500 cheaper. And then I spent another $200 to buy a Casio Protrek watch. Worth every penny.

  • No apple product is worth it.

  • I would highly rempcomend Apple Watch 3 (cheaper than 4 but still with a lot of features.)
Most used is time, notifications, music and volume control, timer, alarm.

Could be used more, is exercise and steps, weather. Texting,

But it’s definitely worth it for me. I love mine.
