Newstart Allowance JSA - PaTHways to Success

I've been on the dole for about 6 months and the JSA are making me do this activity called "PaTHways to Success". It is a three week full time program which helps me with creating resumes and job interviews. Has anyone done this program before and can provide an insight on what I should be expecting?

  • Why do they capitalize the TH in Pathways to Success?

I'd expect you'll have someone lead a group in helping everyone get a resume together and then teaching you how to do job interviews. Probably a lot of time will be spent practicing them.

Although most of the time will probably be actually spent listening to people whinge about how they don't need to be there.

    • There are three stages to gaining employment as per the government. Prepare, Trial and Hire. I hope that everybody there will help me gain some valuable experience to help me land a job.

The only thing this “program” is, is a waste of time! And after the three weeks this will be the only thing they taught you

I agree with > Melbournebargain . You are spot on.

Depends, I did something similar back when I was on the dole, basically they just kicked us off to some company that they bring in to do it (I swear they get kickbacks for money but anyway) then they just tell you basic things, its not /bad/ but most stuff are things you've probably heard or known of before. If you're someone whose researched it a bit, it probably won't be as helpful but if you probably are unsure or new to things it will probably give you some tidbits here and there that could be interesting.

As someone said above it will be a whole lot of people whinging, including why they haven't got a job yet, issues with the job market etc etc. But I made a few friends in there so even though it feels iffy, its kind of cathartic to do and you may make some friends who understand what you're going through.

  • You should ask the person running the course how they got their current job, and how many of the 'skills' they're teaching actually helped them.

  • Thinking of travelling overseas half way of the program. Does anyone know what happens to the program if I decide to leave midway? Will I automatically be taken out of the program once I leave Australia?

    • Reading news, I saw payments cancelled when a person left country to attend mother funeral in NZ despite getting approval. Beware.

Sorry, the LibLab government don't give a shit about the unemployed based on their history. Follow their rules and accept that their donors are getting kickbacks from your shitty workshops and providers.

      • Follow their rules

I criticise the govt for many things, but surely "following their rules" when you're taking their money isn't unreasonable?

        Edit and:

Sorry, the LibLab government don't give a shit about the unemployed based on their history.

Arguably those who're not gainfully employed "don't give a shit" about society.

        • I'll fully agree to their rules, just would like to know what would happen if I do take a trip overseas during my program? I've taken trips overseas before and they have cut off my payments until I have returned back to Australia.

        • What about the pensioners who are strangling the country. The government is taking money from the future to fund the pensioners. If they truly gave a shit about the future they would accept a lower pension, it is already far more generous than the dole, the dole should be good enough for a pensioner.

          • @computer barn find: That should be phased in - people in previous generations may have made life plans dependent on there being a pension in their old age. People growing up today should be aware that they need to save up for their own retirement in terms of both private wealth accumulation and govt mandated super - and for those? Yes, absolutely cut the pensions once they do hit pension age. (I'll note this includes me in the future).

Everyone’s circumstances are different. You need to contact your job service provider and/or Centrelink for a definitive answer.
You will no doubt lose your payment/s as a failure to meet mutual obligations and you might even have to pay some money back if you do not inform them ASAP.

Edit: i dont know your circumstances but if you can afford to “go overseas” I’m not sure you should be on government handouts.. maybe you should use those holiday funds to live off instead of new start and take a holiday at some other time

      • What if op's mother died and had a funeral in NZ?

      • I've worked fulltime since I have been on Newstart, so I have a little bit in my savings. I wasn't sure on whether I needed it or not but applied regardless and it was granted. Planning to travel overseas for a personal issue not for a holiday but will have a shot calling Centrelink.

        • Can you explain how you’re able to work full time and yet still receive Newstart?
I had a feeling your post was bs and the more you comment the more I’m convinced you’re trolling

          • @[Deactivated]: Sorry what I meant was I was working fulltime for a period of six months (after uni) and have been unemployed since then.

        • Make sure to sort it out before you leave, its different when not doing mutual obligation. Could be easier just to wait for after you finish the mutual obligation.

  • They made me do one of these things when I was on the dole years ago, they said that I must always have my contact details for my references of else the resume will be thrown away, I think this is wrong because your references can be hassled for marketing. The course I did just taught you to use experiences such like volunteering if you don't have experience. Many of these people teaching these courses haven't had to look for a job since the mid 90s, they make it seem complicated but the jobs I have got I used a basic resume or cover letter that basically outlined why I am suitable for the job with a little bit of job history, just a sentence for each requirement. Many jobs if you don't meet the requirements or don't have a certain certificate it doesn't matter how good your resume is.
For many places there is a massive line of people applying for the job so it could be easier to get a certificate or start your own small business.
Also some people say to send 20 resumes a day but it is better to sent 1 good resume than 20 half assed ones really but some people still insist on quantity over quality. Also don't take advice from someone who hasn't had to apply for a job recently, I have heard many people who said that they simply got a job by walking around the factories and asking if there was any work because there was a shortage of workers but it just annoys people now unless they are really old school.
