Aerosinusitis / Barosinusitis /Airplane Headache Experience & Treatment?

Hi folks,

I'm having to fly quite a lot this year and I have Aerosinusitis. The pain is extremely severe from the time the plane decents to the time to lands, 20-30 mins or so.

Who else has it and what's your cure?

I will be going to the doctor to see what he can give me. I've had it for at least 7 years but only found out what it was last year.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

For those that don't know or are too lazy to Google, as soon as the plane decents the pressure in my head doesn't normalise (this is how I understood it) due to my sinuses and I get severe pain anywhere from my eyes to my head, ears, eyebrows, etc. It feels like many knives going stabby stabby and my head going to explode.

  • Sounds like a trip to an ENT and augmentation surgery (depending on where the obstruction is). Either way, the recovery is very unpleasant and you'll have a balloon face for a little bit.

May only require sinus ablation or antihistamine/corticosteroids depending on the actual diagnosis/cause.

I use them when I need to fly but am recovering from a cold.

  • +1

I take Sudafed an hour before I land, works for me.

  • Descending is similar to a deep dive— you plug your nose and blow to equalize the ears.

Ascending is opposite— the only trick I know is to stretch your neck far left & right to open the ear canals.

As has been stated— Sudafed works wonders to keep these tiny airways open.

You might also try (if possible- maybe via a script) a saline nasal spray which keeps everything moist & lubricated.

Good luck— it's awful what you describe. I suffer from extreme motion sickness, so I do understand your misery in a way.
