Help Me Find a Car $10K to $20K Budget

Hi, hoping for some crowd sourcing ideas for a second hand car with the following:

  • $10K to $20K budget
  • Sedan or SUV (prefer SUV)
  • Not more than 5 years old
  • Decent style, not the Nissan Juke!
  • Good on petrol (doesn't have to be excellent), E10 ok
  • Colour that still looks okay dirty, as want to wash it only once a month
  • Good size boot
  • Has a bit of grunt, but not a powerhouse… want to able to floor it to change lanes and be ahead
  • Has bluetooth

If you have a car or know someone that fits this description, let me know!

    Sedan: Camry, Corolla, i30, Cerato

    SUV: Sportage, Kona, Tucson, XV

    • And close thread except that I think it will be another 12 months before used Kona's are under 20k

      • Yeah, I found a couple for $21k, so a little haggling might get it right on the 20k upper limit OP was asking.

But finding everything OP was asking for (as vague as that list is) they are not going to find much that is less than 5 years old for $10k end of the spectrum that isn’t garbage (ahem “Chery”, Barina, Spark, Mirage etc…)

Buy a Commodore (the Aussie one, not the Insignia)

    • If OP waits 20 mins, the new Commodore will probably be in the price range they suggested… :D

      • The 2018 Commodore is going to be a rare car one day.

Well, they’ve only sold like maybe 3 of them in total…

  • Kia Sorento is 7 seat, Sportage is 5 seat.

I get 7.5L per 100km on diesel in my Sorento. The equivalent petrol Ford Territorys get about 13L per 100km! Zero complaints about the torque though, and this is the same engine in the 2019 Kias as well so it's proven reliable.

220,000km on mine, and only a dirty accelerator pedal sensor as a significant mechanical issue. I'd buy another Sorento in a heartbeat.

A quick CarSales search shows a 2010 model for $14,500 with under 120,000km, or a newer 2013 one for $19k.

      • Not more than 5 years old

2010~2013 model kinda kills it. I would buy a 2017 Hyundai Kona for the extra $1k or $2k over a 6~10yo Sorrento.

A newer Sportsge would probably fit better with OP’s list.

  • I want to get one of these cars:

    Honda Accord Euro Luxury.
Toyota Corolla Accent or Hybrid Accent.

Both are some of the best cars on fuel and have good luxury features.

It's Corolla "Ascent" and fyi the new model starts at Ascent Sport, not just Ascent

Though I wouldn't say it has "luxury" features either 😉

  • Mazda 6 Wagon or Volvo XC60.
