Overseas Car Hire Insurance Cover - Annual Policy?

Hi,

I am heading to Ireland and have organised a car rental.

The rental includes Third Party Liability (TPL) and CDW (Collision Damage Waiver).

I would like Fully Comprehensive coverage.

To obtain this via the rental company it is 28 Euro a day so quite expensive.

I have a few more trips coming up so was hoping to just grab an annual policy to cover me.

Can anyone recommend a company? My online search has just brought be back to companies covering the Excess but not the rental insurance.

I have checked with my credit card providers and I can't get covered with them unfortunately.

Thanks for any help or advice.

  • Afaik. You can't have an excess without rental insurance. The excess is the payment to initiate a claim with the insurance company the rental company uses (you have no say since it's not your car).

If you have an accident, afaik you either
    1. Either don't pay or have a reduced excess, if you pay the extra $x per day.
    2. Pay the ~$3000 excess out of pocket (however much it is)
    3. Claim on your credit card insurance (if you're covered) or travel insurance, and you pay maybe $250 or something and your insurance covers the rest.

    Which company you renting from?

  • Can you cancel and rebook?
I travel home (Ireland) 2-3 times a year and book car hire through Argus. I book and pay using NAB Platinum which will cover the excess, PITA if it ever happened as you'd have to pay yourself first and then claim via the CC insurance (would be the same with any insurance policy).
Sorry, can't help with an 'after booking' insurance but if you've booked via a broker most will have an option where you can cancel free of charge up to the day before your rental starts.

  • honest question -

what results do you get when you type into google - "car rental insurance Ireland"?

OP: read this post perhaps https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/6950006/redir
    tl;dr RentalCarProtection.com.au

  • A lot of travel insurance policies cover this sort of thing and might be a better option. The travel insurance on your credit card is usually quite basic.
