Debate at Office - Mech Keyboards Make Sounds?

Having a debate at my office with a co-worker that mechanical keyboards can't be used for work purposes since they make sound when we type. He's a total newbie so can anyone me give me points that can make my debate a significant one and also what are the best gaming keyboards that I can show to him? discovered this https://appuals.com/best-wireless-mechanical-keyboards/ which is the best out of this bunch?

there are different types of keys. some make a huge amount of sound, but you can get very quiet ones.
no point in generalising all mechanical keyboards.

which is the best out of this bunch?

Do you want a recommendation for a quiet and affordable mechanical keyboard, or do you specifically need us to select one from that link?
I don't go on the Ozbargain forums to click links to other websites. I'm not looking at that link.

  • take him to an actual pc shop they have the sales display with a few keys to show you the difference you can go from cluck to silence, so he is just looking for something to complain about, some of the older people at work prefer them to click, it is what helped them learning to touch type if they don't hear the click they think they missed a letter, first world problems

    • Or to jbb hifi, they usually have a small display with red, brown, blue, orange and silver keys on display so you can clack (or not) away to your hearts content.

  • Logitech G710 Cherry brown, quiet-ish

  • mechanical keyboards can't be used for work purposes since they make sound when we type.

Not sure what you mean by "can't". I, and all my colleagues in the office, use a mechanical keyboards at work every single day. We've been doing so for the last… umm… many many years!

Besides, what's the alternative to a mechanical keyboard?

I think you’re taking the urine but, just in case you aren’t, “mechanical” refers to the key switch mechanism, with other mainstream (and cheaper) alternative being a membranous keyboard with a dome switch.

“mechanical” refers to the key switch mechanism

Okay - admittedly, I didn't know the difference, so thanks for pointing that out. Most people go out and get their own wireless keyboard and I'm sure there's probably a good mix of different types depending on the different prices people are willing to spend.

  • No worse than people whose mobile phones beep every 10 seconds

    • At least Messenger is no longer a ping.

  • Try and get something that has Cherry Browns (or Brown knock off) as they're more quiet.

    To actually answer the op.

Have a read of this Introduction to cherry MX Mechanical Switches

Especially the section on "Tactile, non-clicky switches" Cherry MX Brown - which is what i use at home and at work. I don't think blues are appropriate at work unless you are in your own office.

You can also purchase these to dampen the noise when you reach end of travel.

  • I find someone with long nails is going to be much noisier typing then any type of keyboard. Or a bloke near me types like the keyboard killed his first child. So mechanical vs non-mechanical really isn't that much of an issue once you consider the effect of the user on the keyboard.

  • All keyboards make noise, except those nasty flat laptop keyboards. From what I know, only blue switches make the loud clicky noise, and most mechanical keyboards (particularly gaming ones) don't use blues.

    • Cherry Reds are LOUD and super common on gaming keyboards.
