IKEA Tradfri Globes (Smart Globes) Now in Australia

Morning all,

More of a community service announcement, was at Ikea Rhodes yesterday and found that they're in the process of stocking the Tradfri globes. E27 globes were in stock, $19.99 per globe (970lm, can change from cool to warm).

I have had several items shipped over from Europe a year ago, they're a much cheaper alternative to others. Works well with Google Home, Apple Homekit (and i guess Alexa, though can't confirm as i don't have one). It works wonderfully, happy to have this… and now that's available here, even better.

Not on the ikea website yet, you do need a hub (sold separately) and at least one device to initially control the light.
Staff said that more stock would be arriving next month (E14 globes). Full European product list: https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/search/?k=tradfri

You sound pretty excited about this. I don’t fully understand why? I use the regular Phillips globes from the supermarket which last for ages - yes I have to stand up to turn the light switch on and off but that’s no big issue. I feel like I am getting old and don’t understand the key benefits of these bulbs?

I have another brand of smart bulb and it is very handy having them turn on automatically at sunset and turn off at a preset or a randomised time in the evening for when we’re away. The former because my teens are hopeless at turning off lights.

The voice/phone controls are handy, and fun, however the big feature is the automation.

Having your lights gently come on in the morning and then turn off automatically (or turning all lights off via voice at once). Then turning back on again automatically before you get home. Having them on schedule for when your away as a bit of a security mechanism.

Being able to tie them into other home automation systems, such that you can start a movie, dim lights at the same time.

Or tie them into sensor controls, i.e. have a sensor on the wall in your hall way that turns on a light or lights for kids bathroom trips ECT. Applications for home automation are only limited by your imagination.

With the price of the bulbs coming down (minus the hub), why wouldn't you want a light with more application then just on/off.

      You answered your own question.

I am excited. Let me explain why:
I use these in a variety of ways. I use them instead of an alarm clock. My lights wake up my family instead of Kyle sandilands or some loud beep beep…
There’s also a schedule to turn lights off, which is handy when a kid forget to turns his/her light off.
There’s a schedule to turn on lights before sunset.

Yes, a normal globe and a light switch works… but not if I am not at home. And to retrofit timers into existing light systems seems overkill when these will fit in a light socket.

And the excitement relates also to the fact that I don’t have to go through lengths to get them.

    • Automation is the big thing with these.

I use the kogan (tuya) lights around the home with an instance of hassio. If I am at home they turn on half hour before sunset and gradually decrease in brightness until 9pm. At which they turn to a 'night light' mode, which is the dimmest setting and removal of blue in the lights. They fully turn off at 10pm.

I've got the system hooked up to read devices connected to wifi as well, so if no one is at home/connected to wifi with their phones that lighting schedule doesn't trigger. If we leave or return to the house during the time period the lights turn on/off accordingly. I've also got the lights linked to bedrooms, so only those individuals lights will turn on/off accordingly.

Got another condition set up so that if people do come back after all the lights are typically out, it turns on hallway, kitchen and their room lights on the night light mode for half an hour.

Requires a bit of work to set up but a big convenience once it is done.

Nah it's so much more convenient when you want to turn the light on to find your phone, unlock your phone, open the app, then turn the light on.

What's wrong with you that is so much easier than walking to a switch or dimmer on the wall.

      /s

      • What's wrong with you that is so much easier than to stop what you're doing, stand up, walk to the switch or dimmer on the wall, then press the switch to turn off the light

FTFY seeing as you made the new way seem like such a complex process.

    • As above, automation.

For me it's also adjusting the brightness and whiteness of a smart bulb. I have 2 lamps beside the bed, both with smart bulbs. I can adjust the light to a more yellow light for watching tv, or a white white for reading. Smart bulbs in my toddlers' rooms so I can adjust the brightness down, and hell I can even let them have a pink light if they want

    • Actually smart globes are near useless unless you also have smart switches. Otherwise you have to never use the light switches which makes them too much of a hassle to use.

    • My LIFX bull wakes me up in the morning, LIFX is very bright so I do notice it after a while when trying to sleep in all day.

Wow, over half the price of the Hue system. I'm looking forward to seeing what parts of the range they bring to Australia.

There’s people that have make them work with hue.

  • Not good reviews here

    • Been running it for over a year, no issues.
There might be some valid points to the arguments, but I stopped listening to it after he started botching about the ugliness of the box, it’s ikea. You don’t pay for excess packaging.

  • I’ve just had someone check Ikea’s back end systems for these items; and - at least for WA - there are no stocking or delivery dates showing in the system for these items.

Be interested to see if there’s anyone else whose sites the range, or is an Ikea ‘insider’ who has more info.

    • I asked at Rhodes, they said “next month” for other tradfri products. Guess it’s watch this space.

  • Rhodes has tradfri gateways, motion sensors and gu10 bulbs now. Was only one gateway left on the shelf when I was there

No bulbs listed, but the gateways are

  • Does everyone change all the light switches throughout their house for smart switches? If you keep regular switches then smart light bulbs are a pure novelty. You either have to never use the light switch, which defeats the whole purpose, or you have to put up with automation not working most of the time.
