How Will GST Be Collected on eBay Purchase over $1,000?

Hi, I'm just wondering how GST will be collected if I buy something on ebay for over $1000 and use shopmate (Aus Post) or another third party to send it to me from America to Australia.

On Australia Post's website they state they only collect GST for items under $1000, and don't include GST in their price estimations, which has me confused. Thanks

    According to ABF

Goods with a value of over AUD1000

To import goods with a value over AUD1000, you need to lodge an Import Declaration. The Import Declaration provides information about the goods you are importing.

There is a processing charge for making an Import Declaration. You will also be required to pay the duty and taxes for your goods.

You may use the services of a licensed customs broker to help you import your goods.

when Importing by post or mail

If the goods you have imported have a declared or assessed value of over AUD1000, you will be sent a First Notice by Australia Post advising that you will need to lodge an Import Declaration with us for the goods.

The Import Declaration will be assessed for duty and taxes and an import processing charge (83KB PDF) will also be applied. After you have lodged your Import Declaration, we will advise you of the amount you need to pay before your goods can be delivered.

Goods with a value over AUD1000 are unable to be to be delivered by Australia Post unless an Import Declaration is made and any duty, taxes and charges owing are paid in full

If you take no action within 30 days of receiving a First Notice then Australia Post may return the goods to the sender (excluding tobacco and tobacco products).

      Hahaha

There is a processing charge for making an Import Declaration. You will also be required to pay the duty and taxes for your goods.

Aka we'll charge you a fee to charge you taxes. How anyone can defend our tax office I'll never know.

      This information is correct.

Just purchase as per usual and customs will pull the articles aside when it reaches the facility is is been processed. You will be notified by mail when this has happened.

Souce: worked with international mail with auspost

    Why the $1,000 limit?
This isn't 2017, aren't all goods bought online (especially eBay and Amazon) now subject to GST, thanks to Gerry?

    • The way it's collected is different as far as I know. When the value is above $1000, the GST is collected when shipment arrives at the border. $1000 and under it's up to the retailer to collect it.

it's up to the retailer to collect it.

Aint none of that "under $1000 collected GST" is ever going to make it back to Australia. All of these China selling sites high fived each other the day that stupidity was announced.

I'd like to see a report on how much profit the government has made collecting this GST. If it's a deficit I think Gerry should have to make up the difference.

        • According to the ATO, Australia collected four times the expected amount - a total of $81 million dollars - within the first three months of the law coming into effect!

@iseenya: Even if that is true (and it may well be), that just goes to show that there was $810 million worth of goods purchased overseas. Meaning that people don't give a shit about Gerry Harvey and his whiney bitch tax and it has done nothing to deter buyers from buying overseas.

    • Overseas purchases under $1000 are now subject to GST however the store must charge the GST and if they don't then you just got yourself some tax free stuff.

Nothing has changed for GST if the value is over $1000.

  • GST collection on imported goods valued over $1000 is a hit and miss. They may sometimes be declared as undervalued or passed through the network unchecked.

    • This happens occasionally through Sydney &Melbourne as the volumes are a lot larger. Brisbane has a higher capture percentage due to less volume.
