Kogan NBN - Intermittent Dropouts, Don't Know if Its The Service or My Modem?

Hi all,

I went to Kogan NBN recently and I've been having weird dropouts (every 10 mins or so, I would say). These are my router logs…

This is a shorter, less verbose history. You can see every 10 minutes it loses eth3 (WAN) connectivity.

Some points:

  • The lease time on the IP address is "600" (I assume, seconds… so 6 minutes? Is this a little short?)
  • It looks like when my router loses the lease it disconnects the WAN port, or something?

The main reason I notice is because I'll be watching Stan or playing Xbox and it will just disconnect and then reconnect ~10 seconds later. It boots me out of xbox online games which is pretty frustrating…

Any thoughts or suggestions?

        You can change this yourself assuming it isn't blocked somehow.

        Google for the model and how to change DHCP lease. If you cannot find the exact model similar models from same brand will usually be the same.

    Does your phone line cable move much? Mine seems to disconnect if the wire is moved just a tiny bit.

    Your lease is 10 minutes, so your router tries to renew after 5 minutes, but seems to timeout too quickly.
    Are you running the latest firmware?
    The latest "Improve interoperability with VDSL modems", maybe that'll help.

    Check all connections first as a matter of course. Disconnect every network device except the PC you are using to diagnose, including all wifi devices.

    These lines are of interest, maybe a factory reset of the router may be in order as there may be something wrong or corrupted with the configuration. Restore the router to factory FIRST, then check for any firmware updates and install them if there are.

    If its FTTN you may need to save your VDSL config settings first before doing anything. Hopefully Kogan has a web page that will be able to guide you through which settings you need.

      Sorry to contradict, and please correct me if I'm wrong.

      [DNSMASQ]: FAILED to start up

      This is the error the DNS forwarder throws after the DHCP lease ended.
      It then runs fine after connection restored.

      [DHCPS-6]: dhcp6_ctl_authinit: failed to open /var/etc/dhcp6sctlkey: No such file or directory

      This is because the router cannot obtain IPv6 from NBN modem.
      Most likely because the modem does not assign IPv6.
      Setting IPv6 to Local Only should stop this from showing up in log at connection and every 30mins after.

        Fair enough, but…

        The first a DHCP lease config problem, the second a IPv6 config problem. Do you agree that some settings must be changed to fix it? That's what i was getting at and hopefully a firmware reset/upgrade would fix that. Thats usually been my way to fix router problems with disconnects and its worked for me unless there is a fault with the hardware itself.
        Your first thread post above mine seems to agree with me on that as well.

        Can you tell the OP what settings must be changed to fix the problem then?

          Yeah, absolutely agree with your way of troubleshooting.

          I just meant to point out that those 2 log entries are quite.. routine (not sure if that's the best word)

          I read in some forums that changing IPv6 to Local Only does help with stability.
          OP can try that if they ever want to switch back to the DIR-882.
          (But why go back to it when they got an Orbi.)

          But because I've seen a few D-Link routers running perfectly fine with all those IPv6 stuff in the log, I didn't think it would help OP in this case.

          My best guess was firmware, it seems to not able to renew DHCP lease, which I've only ever been able to fix by updating firmware.

    Are you using a VPN?

    When your HFC was installed did they use an existing lead in cable and wall socket? This is what happened to me and I had three months of arguing with nbn co before they got the lead in cable replaced. The guy who replaced it showed me the three cm section of the old cable where the outer insulation was gone. I was getting regular drop outs before the cable was replaced.

      How long would your drop out last?

      Originally it was fine. Then I did two things in fairly close succession…

      Changed to Kogan NBN (from Aussie BB)
      Upgraded my router firmware

      It could be Kogan and shorter DHCP routers messing it up. I really want to find a good deal on an rbk50 Netgear orbi but they are really expensive at the moment ☹️

    I switched my DLink DIR 882 router for a Netgear Orbi and now its rock solid. I think the D-Link was rubbish to be honest.
