GST Question on Gift of Luxury Bag from Overseas

Hi,

I couldn’t find an answer on customs or ATO. So I’m hoping someone could help me on various forums.

My mum is sending me an authentic luxury bag she owns that cost more than $1000. I didn’t think too much of that until now.

Am I going to be slapped with GST? Considering this is a second hand bag (mum owns it and is passing it down). So, GST has already been paid before where she bought it.

Thanks! Any help much appreciated.

If it's a gift, then no taxes apply.

  • I'm jealous you're getting $1000+ gifts.

    lol

  • So, GST has already been paid before where she bought it.

When and where did she buy the bag?

    • Years ago? I don’t know where.

Depreciation. It could well be valued at less than $1,000 now.

    • An Hermes Birkin appreciates and Chanel usually maintains its value so it depends on what bag OP is getting.

  • If it was purchased in Australia and GST paid on it it should be good. Can she include the original invoice with the shipment?
