Any reason for choosing vornado over xiaomi 2s?

    • -3

      Xiaomi doesn’t have band 28 😝

      • Other than that?

        • Doesn't have NFC either.

    • If you don't want to control the purifier by mobile phone app then go for Vornado!

It's a box with a fan in one end and a HEPA and/or carbon filter at the other.

Watches one video and thinks all air purifiers are evil. Its only the ionizing ones that hes worried about and even then, its not that bad.

  • A few reviews online screaming about the noise. Tempted to get it but… being a clearance item I dare say the filters will be hard to get soon

    • Any reason why they're clearance? New model coming up or just discontinued?

We have one at home. It can get loud on the max setting, but on the lowest setting (which it usually defaults to, even after automatic air quality detection) it's at a level you can drown out or ignore relatively easily. I wouldn't say it's louder than an air conditioning or a fan, but YMMV. Typically we leave it on when no-one's at home, and then turn it off/move it to another room once it's done its thing.

      • How often do you change the filters over?

        • We haven't had to yet, but I believe they're recommended to be replaced every 6 months. It's only a few months old, but can't say I've noticed any decrease in air quality.

Air purifiers are like bubble jet printers in that manufacturers sell them cheap in the knowledge they will get their money through you buying their expensive filters.

I have a Sharp branded air purifier which is very good but the filters are half the price of the machine.

It would be great if there was a cheap, quality, bog standard filter that fitted a multitude of machines (and pigs might fly)

      • I have the Xiaomi. The filters are $39 and last 4-6 months. Not too bad price.

        Seems to work.

  • How is this compare to Philips?

    • Philips have a heavy rep of just contracting out their products to Chinese factories and slapping their label on them. That being said, that individual design tends to be unique to Philips.

      Cheap filter=Xiaomi
      Philips=Good support and good name
Vornado=Good design but not sure about the filters availability

    • I would say the top brand for air purifiers in consumer level are Panasonic, Hitachi and Sharp (Not in any particular order)

  • Very interested. But how much are the filters?

    • Answer:

You need a pair of Carbon filters in addition to a HEPA filter.

      2 carbon filters: $30 + $17.50 shipping.

      HEPA filter: $76 + $17.50 shipping.

      Expensive.

Not eligible for Amazon Prime btw.

      • You can buy the filters from the vornado site for

        Hepatitis filter $50.90
        Carbon filters $20.90

If you include these then the postage becomes zero.

        • The HEPA filter is $53.90 but I did end up getting those. I'm not sure how long Vornado will continue stocking them for though. They are hard to find anywhere else.

Btw, to protect against Hepatitis, I think you need a needle.. It's expensive too. About $150 for Hep A shot.

          • @lostn: Sodding autocorrect.

Hopefully Vornado would stock for a bit longer to keep faith, and also as a money spinner.

  • Ended up buying one just to try out with a filter set.

I've looked at some worrisome reviews with the rattling noise after a year, and the fan being very loud. This is a risk but I'll try it anyway.

I think the $489 RRP is BS because the successor model AC550 sells on Amazon for $209 USD ($229 USD RRP). That's for the current model. The AC500 would be even less. That's some serious Aussie tax if $489 AUD is what it translates to.

Shame that these aren't easy to get in Australia. They've made the perfect purifier at a great price, exposing the BS in the industry at the same time. The shipping costs are horrendous, however.

    • rope up a fan to a filter. Cheap and easy.

  • I regret buying this.

It is so noisy. I read their description of it being whisper quiet.

The only acceptable noise level is the lowest (out of 4). The rest are too noisy. The max sounds like a jet engine. I set it to auto, and it selects level 3 (the highest it can go in auto). The same auto setting on my Xiaomi puts it into quiet mode.

The filters are super expensive. You need two HEPA filters ($53 each) and one twin pack of carbon filters ($20) plus shipping. The HEPA filters thankfully last twice as long as carbon filters.

This unit is not smart at all. How it determines when filters need changing is based on number of hours it's been running. 4000 hours for carbon and 9000 hours for HEPA.

The Xiaomi 2S I have can tell what percentage is left on the filter. And the filter is much cheaper. That unit is also not as noisy.

The Xiaomi also has a PM0.3 meter that tells you the cleanliness of the air. The Vornado cannot measure this.

In a single year, the consumable cost will surpass the cost of the unit once the included filters are used up. I don't think I want to continue using it after that, but then I've got a $200 paperweight.

There's no way I would have bought this thing for its $500 RRP. I regret buying it at $200. The "whisper quiet" claim is false advertising. They would have only used it at the lowest setting.

    Very disappointed.
