Where to Shop for 40+ Y.o. Dad Bod?

Key points:

Getting back in to dating after 20 years. Sigh.

Don't wanna look 60+

Don't wanna spend a fortune, but something a little nicer than Target/Kmart

Have worn uniforms at work for the last 25 so I have zero clue when it comes to clothes.

Am hard to fit so would rather buy in store. (As in 6'5" long arms and legs)

Help! :)

A little short for my needs but near enough for under $50. Good start. Thanks. :)

Short? What does that mean in the context of a clothing store? How could all the clothes be too short?

Anyway I get almost everything from uniqlo. Fairly cheap, good quality, good materials, simple and smart styles that won't make you look like a tool. Once I stopped looking for clothes with unique (and usually terrible) designs or tshirts with funny pictures, I've found little reason to shop elsewhere. I've got a bunch of their non-iron shirts which don't need any special care and look smart without being formal, and are basically all I wear for work and weekends.

The main thing is to get clothes that fit nicely. Slightly tapered shirts, slim jeans etc. Not tight, not skinny. Just enough to almost/slightly hug your shape. Even if you're a fatty, oversized is never a good idea. Even a $3 kmart shirt can be fine as long as the fit is good.

OP could be really tall, and UNIQLO don't stock his size? UNIQLO is tailored for asian bodies, although they offer larger sizes in the western countries, they don't venture too far out of the average sizes. I know lots of people who would love to get stuff from UNIQLO but can't cause nothing fits them.

          • @Broke-Ken: Ah yea fair enough, I guess their stuff doesn't get too big come to think of it. Still, kinda seems like being tall enough to exclude certain common stores should have made it as a detail in the question. "Dad bod" just implies like a bit of unwanted gut, not being some sort of gigantic bigfoot

Yeah. Sorry. Didn't explain myself too well. Bought a pair of chinos from there on the recommendation. I was at Eastland feeling lost at the time of posting. I'm 6'5 and all arms and legs. Not easy to find pants and long sleeves that fit.

      • go in store
        heaps of sale stock available!

  • polo tops and jeans.

vb shorts and bintang singlets for the weekend

Is that what makes a good impression with the ladies these days?

H&M has affordable clothes with a tad more style than Target/Kmart.

    • Thanks. I'll take a look.

A decent tailor can work wonders. There are some out there that are pretty budget. If you're in Melbourne have a look at Dejour jeans - if you can man up and face the crowds and congestion you'll leave with a really great fitting pair of jeans for a really decent price. Fair warning: its busy/confronting.

I think at the end of the day you want things that fit you reasonably well without being unnervingly tight. Either you luck out and find the stare that makes things to your size/shape, or you make them fit you. Choice is yours!

    • Hmmm. That might be worth a drive over. I used to be able to get Levis that fit perfectly but the fit/cut seems to have completely changed. That and the quality sems a lot crappier these days too.

  • Lowes - just joking. DJs and Myer clearance racks :)

Had the same issues but 5'6"

Luckily my dates were pretty forgiving of my dress sense. They seemed far more concerned about fitness and body shape - so if you are a fatty, try and lose some weight.

I had all my Levis taken in and up (apparently scrunched up cuffs aren't nice) by a tailor ($15 for the waist and $10 for the length) but they still don't impress my girl.

Went on holidays to USA and hit the outlet stores:
Bought some dressy chinos, shorts and t-shirts from Banana Republic and asked for advice from the gay sales person. Apparently I'd being buying several sizes too big and went from XL to M.

Bought some decent jeans from Calvin Klein

    In Oz:
    Nice bbq shirt from https://alfiesfriendrolfe.business.site/
    Saba dress shirts are nice
Also a decent pair of dress pants and some nice "casual" pair of leather shoes.

A lot depends on where you go out to. We do a lot of small bars near the city so dressy is appropriate.

Good luck with it. There are a lot of nice women out there

    • I'm not hugely overweight but carrying a few extara kg. Buying off the rack is just painful if you don't fit the standard dimensions. I must say, that it seems that not being a complete a#^hole puts you ahead a bunch of the competition. I'm never going to be massively stylish, but just want to look half decent. Maybe I need to find a gay friend? Happy to invest a bit of money but need a bit of direction. Thanks for the response.

      • Yeah, don't be a d!ck.
I asked a lot of my dates why they decided to make the leap of faith and go out with me and it boiled down to being polite, respectful, communicative, not acting like I was god's gift to women and not sending photos of my penis. None of those things are particularly hard to achieve.

Prior to meeting them I just treated them like they were my Sister but my main goal was to meet nice people and have a conversation / drink / meal.

NB: I actually knocked back a lot of dates because my gut said they were dodgy. I also had a lot of women knock me back because I was only a short time out of a long term relationship (it made sense).
