Please Suggest Car or SUV between $35,000 to $40,000

Hello OzBargainers.

I am looking for a car under 35K, can go upto 40K with at least 1.5 ltr turbo engine and reasonable boot size with safety features like Auto Emergency Braking, blind spot sensor, Electronic Stability Control, Lane-keeping assist & cruise control etc.

Couple of weeks back a dealership offered me Hyundai i30 N line premium for 35.5K but the deal fell through later. I did not wanted to pursue it further as the car did not have blind spot detection. I am looking at couple of cars right now like Kia Cerato GT, upcoming Honda Civic RS, Ford escape ST, Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and upcoming RAV 4.

I am having hard time selecting the cars, guys please suggest. Thanks in advance.

UPDATE: So I went to Kia and Honda dealership today and test drove both cars again. The real life performance is pretty much same, although KIA looks better on paper.

So Honda dealer offered me new Civic RS for $33k including floor mats and exhaust finishor and Civic also had ongoing 7 years warranty and 7 years NRMA roadside assistance. So bought the car. Thanks for all your suggestions. Cheers!!

$0-$40k. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to realise that's what OP means.

          below 41k and after 39 K

Honestly, If you were willing to spend a bit more I would suggest the Hyundai Kona Electric. Depending on which state you're in, it will be cheap to run. In South Australia it would set you back about $12 in electricity usage charges for 480km, which means it will probably be under $10 in every other state.
Alternatively there are free electric charging stations in SA and possibly other states (not exclusive to Tesla), which can drive your bills down further. It pays itself off in the long run. Much cheaper than the $3000+ I spend per year in fuel.

    • Going off pricing shown on reviews in NZ here and here, that's a NZ$43,000 price premium for EV… and you have to charge at home off the mains, and a 400km range or so…

That's a hellova big difference in price.

Much cheaper than the $3000+ I spend per year in fuel.

AU$41,600 difference = nearly 14 years of fuel costs!

      https://www.caradvice.com.au/682173/hyundai-kona-electric-pr…

$60-$70,000, +ORC. That's $22-32,000 more than the top-spec model. 7-12yrs for you to recoup your fuel costs. And that's not accounting for the $10-12/480kms

      • The price I was quoted by a local hyundai dealer was low 50k range, which is not too far above the 40k the OP listed in this post as his upper limit (his thread title says 35k-40k). So assuming it stays under 55k, it would not take too long to recoup the benefits in fuel.

And as mentioned, there are free charging stations, which offsets the charging costs.

        • Interesting they'd say low $50k, when Hyundai have stated "under $60-70k". Plus on-roads, which adds another $11-$14k on those figures.

Pretty safe to say that you'll be up for minimum $60k drive away for 1 of them, and that's being conservative. Again, you'd recoup your fuel use in 7 years, not including the $10-12/480kms.

And as mentioned, there are free charging stations, which offsets the charging costs.

Which aren't at houses. You'd need to charge off the mains, which for most people, is coal-powered…

          • @spackbace: WTF? The Kona EV is going to be $60~70k? They must be havin’ a laff… That has to be for the big battery model.

If this is the case, that car is off my shopping list. Nearly bought an Ionic before I found about about the Kona EV. Local dealer told me the same thing as @danger. The new Kona EV was going to be cheaper than the Ionic for the base model and about the same price for the 480km version.

(Fropanity) me, but at that price it pushes it up into the LCT bracket. Yikes.

            • @pegaxs: I'm just going off that article, was doing research as I wrote that comment lol hence the NZ$ stuff

    • I live in apartment block and it's not feasible for me to buy an electric car, as I would have to go to charging station every time. Also, I am from country where vehicle import cost is 280% but not for electric vehicle though, funnily enough where I am from Hundai Tucson would cost $140K and Kona electric is already available for around $55k.

      • Sounds like Singapore or Hong Kong.

When I was in Singapore recently, a Honda Grom motorcycle that costs about $5k here, was $14k over there.

    • That's great, except that car isn't for sale in Australia, and based off New Zealand pricing, it will likely cost around $70k for the 64kw version. (No point in getting the smaller battery).

  • Subaru XV premium and change.

I hope your investment is high-yield.

  • Does nobody like Honda and Ford.

    • +5

No. I'd rather walk than drive a Ford.

      • +1

Yeah, I'm sad, I bought a Focus, transmission problems and the heater core broke… in a car that's less than 5 years old.
DON'T BUY FORD… terrible customer service.

    • Focus is good. Have had a few hire car Focus models and I've enjoyed them more than Corollas or i30s by some margin

I was test driving the Kia on the weekend. The suspension is VERY firm and the noise the engine makes when you "push the petal to the metal" is super loud. Great features for the price!!! We also test drove the Hyundai Kona, which wasn't bad either.

    • the noise the engine makes when you "push the petal to the metal" is super loud. Great features for the price!!!

      Best feature ever….

You didn't nominate a currency , but apparently you can Buy a Tesla for $35k. So buy that.

if possible, wait for new gen Mazda 3, if not Honda civic100%

  • Kia Cerato GT best value for your money.
Civic is good but only the highest trim level offer those safety features.
Subaru as slow as a corolla, engine need updating.
Upcoming Mazda 3 looks promising. Very premium looking car with new engine.

    • The new Civic from VTI-L offer all those features, thats why I am considering Civic RS as well.

  • Poll or it didn’t happen

  • I bought Honda HRV Luxe 2019last week. Couldn't be happier. Test drive it, it may change your mind. Goodluck.

OP, check out the new 2019 Suzuki Vitara Turbo Allgrip. They're set to hit dealers at the end of March/early April and I think it ticks off all your boxes.

Been driving for close on 57 years and never needed blind spot detection. I have eyes, my head swivels on my neck and my mirrors are set correctly.

BTE. Most people have no idea how to set mirrors.

    • I have been driving without Blind spot as well,
a friend of mine was in pretty bad accident while changing lanes, he partially was in fault but blind spot detection would have prevented it. I believe it should be a standard feature for this price.

    • I have eyes, my head swivels on my neck

      pics or not true!

    • Blind spot alert does not remove the need for checking it only highlights there may be something there you need to check for. People don't trun their heads without blindspot. Safety features are just that to aid in safe driving behaviours. Autonomous vehicles aren't too far off and will remove user/conditions and car error completely in the long run.

I was in the exact same category as you, and decided to go with the 2018 Rav4 gxl which comes with the features you’re after.
They are selling them for cheap now, I picked mine up for just under 34k.
The 2019 rav4 has a much more rugged look and looks like more of a mans car, which my fiancé wasn’t too much of a fan of. Not to mention you won’t be able to get any discount on it when it initially comes out, so be prepared to pay 40k.
Toyota’s hold excellent resell value also. I project to sell my rav4 in 5 years for 22k considering the kms will be relatively low.

    • You got a sweet deal, was it AWD or 2WD?

      • 2wd. Awd was 3k more

    • I'm looking at same model now.

$34k Driveaway? I guess no leather interior nor Accessories right?

      • Yes. No premium interior, but came with floor mats.
It took quite a bit of negotiating to get it down that low. Let me know who you go :)

        • What color did you get?
I had my own post but not looking great atm, https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/441603
          Deal fell short :P

Hard to knock back the rav4 at that price given it comes with 7 years warranty also!!

I thought it came with 5? How did you bump to 7? what's the catch lol
Also thought they'd be heavily discounted but surprisingly not by much from MSRP at all in my rea

@capslock janitor: Colours were limited. I got peacock black. Black would have been my first preference.
You get an additional 2 years on the 5 if you get your car serviced at Toyota for the first 5 years.

            • @dealcrown: Peacock is nice :] congratz!

Is worth it though to service there instead of an independent mechanic who may be cheaper? (IDK?)

              • +1

@capslock janitor: It’s capped pricing for the first 3 years ($180).
After that, I’m not sure what it is. I actually recall the sales rep telling me that as long as you get it serviced between years 3-5 by an accredited mechanic, then your warranty extends to 7 years.
I will confirm this with them in due course :)

      • Hard to knock back the rav4 at that price given it comes with 7 years warranty also!!

  • +1

Does it have to be new? I would sit on it for a few months and wait for some low-mile or demo 2018 Mazda 6 GT 2.5T's to come available. Ticks every box you list and then some.

  • +1

I know of the perfect car for you except it falls short as it's only $34990 drive away.

    • I am looking for a car under 35K, can go upto 40K

      I dun geddit.

      • My budget is 35k and If I really liked the car I would not mind stretching my budget upto 40k. Did u geddit now? :)

        • You played the title.

Please Suggest Car or SUV between $35,000 to $40,000

After the title they changed their mind a little.

I am looking for a car under 35K, can go upto 40K

          Was there a $34990 suggestion?

          • @Speckled Jim: Between 35k-40k suggests somewhat of a New car.

But obviously anything under is it worthwhile too lol

    • Plz plz tell me, Where were you until now?

    • +1

      $10 gobby

  • 2019 Mazda 3 handsdown.

  • I've been eyeing the Subaru XV aka Crosstrek.

    https://www.subaru.com.au/xv

Similar performance to a 2.0L Impreza or the older Liberty GX. Lots of features for the money and a decent interior.

Starts at $33k but the premium model at $37k is the version I'm considering.

  • new gen mazda 3 100%

Congrats on the Civic RS OP, had mine for 2 years now and very happy with it!

  • +2

Good choice, op. The Civic is a great car.

  • I think kia has the best lane keep assist.

  • With the new Mazda 3 coming up, the existing range is having huge price cuts. You can grab a Mazda 3 2018 SP25 or SP25GT at a bargain price. Check with the dealers.
