Transport Live Pet Fish from Sydney to Brisbane

I am looking for suggestions on how to transport live pet fish from Sydney to Brisbane which is also cost effective. I know aquariums use Fastway or Startrack, but I dont seem to be able to find information on how to go about it. Any suggestions will be welcome.

  • Qantas Freight

    • Qantas freight is too expensive but thanks

Bear in mind a courier will literally throw your cartons around.
Unless you are confident that your fish will survive being treated like a football, I would strongly recommend sending it via Qantas Freight.

  • Wouldn't you just package them and send them via the courier companies?
    - Fish in plastic bag (with water)
    - Plastic bags into insulated foam box
    - Pack to prevent movement within box
    - Seal box

Not sure if you need a little plastic castle in each bag, or if you could just put one centrally in the box.

With activated carbon in a little breathable satchel, Even go to an aquarium when they're in the plastic bag and have them fill it with oxygen.

    • Will this help them survive for 24-36 hours travel?

      • Assuming that there is sufficient oxygen in the appropriate quantity of water for the quantity of fish per bag, and that the plastic bags do not burst, why not?

East Australian Current? It works for nemo and co :)

    • Thumb a lift with Migaloo

    • Wrong direction. Southward.

Just one more discomfort for your living, breathing, feeling ornaments. Is it really necessary? How would you like to be shipped in a dark box with no idea where you're going?

where are we going at the end

      • If you're an ornamental fish then most likely to just another glass prison.

    • with no idea where you're going

Maybe if you tell me how you propose to explain the concept of travelling from Sydney to Brisbane to a pet fish, I'll take your comments a tad more seriously.

    • I'm a pet fish. (Yes I get WiFi cause my bowl is next to the router… May get fish cancer but that's a whole other topic).

I like travelling. Stop spouting PETA-esque bullshit. The nitrates in my water make me sick.

Check with your vet but I'm pretty sure you can freeze fish and they come back once thawed out.

    • Yeah, cryonics. Pretty sure it works on human too.

    • Check with your plumber but I'm pretty sure you can put the fish down one downpipe and they'll come back up at another if you give good enough maps to the fish.

    • Thawed fish but not moving.

Should I put the guts back in before or after defrosting?

Before worrying about transport check if the fish are allowed into Qld. as Qld. has a pretty long list of prohibited fish. Koi as an example is not permitted in Qld but is permitted in NSW.

    • Yup…confirmed that!

    airtasker
get someone who is driving, catching a bus or train to bring it for ya!

Sell it to someone who will take care of your fish

  • i would assume your fish would die over the distance…as you would know they are pretty sensative creatures and can literally die from the slightest environment change do as per previous person

    • I think that is a bit harsh.

I am assuming that OP's fish are goldfish or similar (mentions 'pet fish').
There is a global industry in the farming and transportation of similar fish.

As one example, this business even talks about how they use Toll / Startrack and Aust Post for deliveries:

  • Give Fastway or Startrack a call.

Don't feed the fish for 3-4 days before transporting them.

Go to an aquarium shop and pay them to pump oxygen into a large bag containing the the fish, it will be 10% water and 90% oxygen.

    Fish will be fine.

    • Sounds like a good idea….However both Fastaway and Stratrack have said it will be around 1-2 days for transport..so worried about that!

They are fish, they should be able to swim. Why not throw them in the ocean and they make their way to Sydney.

    • Your comment made me lol. You sir, are either a comedic genius or an idiot. I'm going to go with genius :)

      • Thank you finally someone has a sense of humour and not getting offended
