Build-A-Bear Australia Placed into Voluntary Administration, 10 Stores to Close within 2 Weeks

Bit sad really. As a parent of toddlers, they love their bears we bought a few years back as part of a deal. The staff were always really friendly. Yes, the clothing/accessories was where they wanted to make their money, but was just a good novelty thing for young kids.

The company has 30 stores and other retail outlets across Australia, with 10 of those set to close over the next two weeks. Those stores include the ones at Logan Hyperdome, Kawana, Mt Ommaney, Werribee, Eastland, Garden City (WA), Carousel, Marion, Green Hills and Miranda.

The remaining stores will continue to trade normally, administrators say, and staff will continue to be paid normally. Gift cards will also continue to be honoured.

    Third building company this week.

    • care to elaborate ?

      • A sign of the times. This is the third business I've seen recently that has gone bust. When I said building, I meant housing building and teddy building.

guess giving away a free bear to kids last year didnt help
guess no one got assessories and just got the bear for a few bucks

Niche market, once all the parents done with their Bear building, game over.
Need a ecosystem to business to grow.

    • its not the bears that killed it, its the cost of the costumes

      • can't imagine the rent at Westfield (etc) did them any favours.

        • What does a small shop at a good Westfield cost? Does it vary across the shopping center depending on locatiom?

          • @[Deactivated]: It does, small shop, less customers (Niche product), higher rent price, not doing any favours to the business.

          • @[Deactivated]: Kiosk at Chadstone is around $140-200k a year depending on size.
