Bank Changed Their Minds - Need to Get Reimbursed. How?

Friend needed to get their income and bank statement translated from Spanish to English to secure a Loan. There were a couple of options out there. Full Translation which costs $500-600AUD or an Extract which Costs $250-$300. My friend ask the bank if they accept an extract copy. And even sent them an example. The bank told him that extracts are fine. So my friend went ahead a paid around $300 to get an extract translation and emailed the bank. 2 days later the bank emailed my friend bank and told him that they can’t accept extract. It needs to be the full translation copy.

He has to now pay another $500 to get a full translation. As this was not his fault, he wants the bank to reimburse him the initial $300. The bank staff that he was dealing with said upper management above them/ different team rejected the extract. And is currently making excuses.

How can he get his money reimbursed? Should he directly go to the bank and speak to upper management? Get the ACCC involved?

    I'd chase down the banks complaints department. I've had success dealing with CBA's complaints before.

    If that doesn't work try the Ombudsman.

    Un amigo necesitaba obtener sus ingresos y el extracto bancario traducido del español al inglés para garantizar un préstamo. Había un par de opciones por ahí. Traducción completa que cuesta $ 500-600AUD o un extracto que cuesta $ 250- $ 300. Mi amigo pregunta al banco si aceptan una copia del extracto. E incluso les envió un ejemplo.   • Tell the Bank you elected to provide Extract that they nominated as sufficient and to write back as to why this is now inadequate.

    Assuming he has the “the extract is fine” in writing..?
    Would think this would help his case

  • Can your friend use a different bank? Assuming they have got the extract done by a 3rd party?

    The bank did not benefit from your $300 spent. You will never get a refund for it.

    If you're not happy with the way the bank is handling this, change banks.

  • Look around for cheaper translation services.

    • I was surprised myself how expensive accredited translation services are. Around $200 bucks for extracts by our very own Service NSW website.
      I know people can’t koke around here. Just use google translate. But it’s not that simple.

  • Couldn't you just ask the translation place to pay the difference between extract and full? They done the important bit already didn't they?

    Is he a migrant by any chance? Dept of social services provides a translation service. Not sure if he is a migrant and its only applicable to certain visa classes but worth a shot.

  • The problem is that they don't have to offer him a loan, so they could easily just say: "Okay, we've accepted the extract, and from the extract you don't qualify for a loan."
