Repair on Old Fridge

Hi all,

I'm trying to help my Mother decide whether to get her 18 year old Fisher Paykel fridge repaired or buy a new one. The fridge has been beeping and it appears it is no longer cooling. But the freezer seems fine. She has found a company that will come out at a cost of $100, they say they don't charge an hourly rate. But I'm thinking by the time she pays for parts it may not be worth fixing. With her age I'm estimating she'll only need it another year or two at the most as she would need to go into care. She tells me she's pressed a button inside the fridge which has stopped the beeping temporarily, it keeps happening but she really needs to sort this out before it drives her crazy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Even if it's an indication of cost of your repairs for something similar. Thanks.

  • There are places that sell second hand fridges, particularly through some Op shops. You can, also, ring them up to take your old fridge away. Might be worth investigating.

Just replace it man. Let her relax. Just buy a new second hand fridge so she doesn't have to worry or deal with petty stuff like this.

You mention her age, I'm assuming she's a pensioner? Get a new fridge.

She will be entitled to discount, read here

40% off the cost of a new fridge.

^This. But also I'm assuming it's quite large if it used to be for a family, get a smaller one while you're at it, the energy savings will be significant.

I would guess the defrost element has gone faulty causing the evaporator to ice up and restricting air flow to the fridge. It’s beeping would refer to a error code.

To repair or replace? Well that’s more of a personal decision. Some people are attached to their appliance, they know where everything is and how to use it. Weigh up age of unit and cost to repair V replacement. As GangGang said there is the discount via the Government and The Good Guys

  • I wonder if the gasket has come off a bit and not aligned, so too much air is escaping and not cooling. I think you can put a piece of paper in between and close fridge and see if it comes out easily. Anyway I only say this because recently my fridge did something similar.

I just unscrewed the gasket out, cleaned it, put it back in and my fridge is perfect now.

  • You really can’t make decision ? lol

  • "With her age I'm estimating she'll only need it another year or two at the most as she would need to go into care."
Gumtree… get a near new fridge prob less than the cost of a repair.

  • Give her your fridge, buy a new one for yourself.

  • I has this same issue.
We got some part in the Freezer replaced, cost 200 bucks.
Now it's making noise and I've decided to just get a new one.

Otherwise I'll end up spending the same money fixing as a new fridge.

So yeah, get a new one.

  • Same Issue here the heating element in my freezer stopped working it would start beeping as it would ice over completely and block the cooling to the fridge so I ended up with a new one.

When It constantly started beeping at 3am I got sick of it ha
