Advice or a good deal on a Modem/Router ADSl 2+?

Im looking for a new wifi modem/router. Can anyone suggest a good model or even better an ozbargain sale on any?

EDIT:
I get good coverage at the moment on ADSL2+ in my area. Im after WIFI N, I dont think I need VOIP at this stage. Ethernet 100 is ok but will look at 1000 if its not too expensive. Im looking at spending around $200.

Thanks.

  • What Wifi (N or G)
    VoIP capability?
Do you need multiple Ethernet ports? (what speed Ethernet? 100 or 1000)
and do you live in an area where you have a good quality line that gets high speeds or an area with a low quality line that has dropouts and poor speeds?

Whirlpool is the best place to start looking for recommended models.
Specifically the top 3 threads (highlighted Brown/Orange) here http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/82

  • Thanks for your reply.

If you have a reliable, high speed connection, then the Billion modems are recommended:
      http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1268327
      Billion 7300N (100M Ethernet)
      Billion 7800N (1000M Ethernet)
The Draytek's from the recommended list would do you well too, but will stretch your budget.

The Netcomm will do fine, but is more recommended for holding unsteady connections (at the cost of a bit of speed) and also has only 100M Ethernet

    • This would have been helpful in the body of your post.

  • My recommendation would be a Billion 7800N ($160) and upgrade the antennas to 3 tplink ant2408cl antenna ($8 each x 3) … $184 total for a great modem with excellent wireless range/strength

  • Is wireless G enough for ADSL2 or do you need wireless N?

    • Its not a matter of ADSL2, but whether you want your computers to have a faster and more reliable connection to the router.

      • But, doesn't the speed of ADSL2 connection exceed the maximum realistic transfer rate of wireless G?

        • It may and it may not. Think of it like this

          [ADSL2 Exchange]<—-Line—->[Router]<——Wireless——>Connected devices

The Wireless is independent of the ADSL2 connection. Wireless G maybe sufficient enough to utilize the speed of your ADSL2 connection if you are close by to the router. But if you want a newer protocol and power powerful one, then Wireless N is good.

        • That diagram is not quite correct, because there is no modem shown.

Also note that often there's no need to have a Gigibit network connection on a Modem, unless you are using it's internet router/switch ports.

Many people make a small network like this, which means you do need Gigabit…

          <—Incoming Cable—>[Modem + Router combined]<—GIGABIT—>[Computers]

But for wireless only, you don't need Gigabit…

          <—Incoming Cable—>[Modem + Router combined]<—Wireless—>[Computers]

And for a larger network, it's much easier to set it up like like this…

          <—Incoming Cable—>[Modem]<—100base—>[Router]<—100base—>[Switch]<—GIGABIT—>[Computers]

Hence, if you use a separate Gigabit Switch, your Router and Modem need only have 100base connection.

        • Or this:

          <—Incoming Cable—>[Modem + Router combined]<—100Mb—>[Gigabit switch]<—Gb—>[Computers]

Gigabit switches have no problem autonegotiating 100Mb on the link if that's the max speed supported by the peer.

  • +1 for the billion 7800…got two one at work and home

Good buy, it's a rock solid router. Don't forget to flash the firmware with the latest version once you get it.
