Help Me Find a UPS for My Home CCTV System & Modem/Router

Hello,

Trying to find a UPS battery backup for my home CCTV system & modem/router. I read through some Internet forums i.e. the likes of whirlpool and people on there recommended a dual battery setup something around 1200-1500VA?

My requirements/preferences:
-At least 30 minutes of run time on the UPS once mains power is cut.
-User serviceable battery so that I can swap out the battery in the future.

Equipment list that will be utilizing the UPS at a high level:
-8 IP POE cameras (~80W power use at 10W per camera).
-1 NVR server w/3TB HDD,8 port POE network switch built-in (~60W power use I think…).
-1 standard ISP issued FTTN modem/wifi router (~24W power use).

Thanks!

  • Is there any point on plugging modem/router/nbn to UPS? According to this, only FTTP would work in the event of a power outage.

Depends where the power outage is. If you're doing this for a security system, then thieves would just turn off the house power. Street power would still be on, and so keeping the networking equipment on the UPS would still keep the internet flowing.

Yes correct. Mainly in the event of (hopefully never) where power is forcefully turned off instead of an power outage. Hence want to keep my internet connection active for cloud backup/alerts.

I use this. I run PoE cameras so all the P connects to this here UPS. I change the SLA battery every 24 months.

Runs the dedicated NVR server, modem and router.

          Will upgrade to powerwall soon.

FttN still works in a power outage for a few hours at least.
Source: I have a UPS on my FttN modem and we sailed through a day time power outage without even knowing… It was only when I went to boil the kettle that I realised that there was no power.. even then, I initially assumed that the breaker for the Kettle had switched, it was only when I went out to the meter box to reset the breaker that I realised.

I bought an old Sola UPS 325 750VA 470W unit off Ebay for $10 with knackered batteries.. $80 of batteries later , from BatteriesDirect, and we're in business.
It's a power hog though runs warm (like all UPS, so don't put it in a cupboard) and makes an irritating Buzz, so you don't want it in a room where you want silence!

Really need to work out the power usage for all the devices you want to run and go from there.
Plug the total requirement into one of the UPS provider websites and you'll get an answer to your needs pretty quick.

  • We use APC at work. Never has any issues.
